Anyone want to do a christmas cookie exchange? We used to have these at my work but don't do it anymore. If there is enough people, we could end up with a couple of dozen different kinds of bars or cookies. I find it alot easier to make one kind than 6-9 different kinds. Let me know. Ann

me too! i am interested. only one question that i have. would these be sort of special cookies or just ordinary ones?

and would we make a list out so we dont all make the same thing?

tasma

Good idea, Kitca, once we have enough people we can post what kind we are going to make and you can make what ever kind you want but it is a Christmas cookie exchange. Anybody can make chocolate chip or peanut butter cookies but if you can make those kind extra special that would be fine too.

I am having a cookie exchange with friends this year. Any suggestions on something that tastes good, fairly easy to make in a big batch and that people would like to recieve in a cookie exchange?

I'd be interested, but I guess it depends when the exchange is going to happen ....I'm only in town a few weeks here, a few weeks there...going to school out of town...but if it's in my time line..I'd definately be interested!

You can make small biscotti and make them special by dipping them in chocolate or doing a chocolate hazelnut one...one batch can make a lot of cookies.

Look up "spritz cookies" these are cookies that you make with a piping bag, they are therfore very fast. Take any recipe and dress them up with candied fruit, a piece of chocolate, icing sugar...

fried pastries are great...roll up some sweet dough fairly thinly then fry it. sprinkle well with icing sugar (or cinnamon sugar) again my recipe is metric!.....these are the types of things that you pop in your mouth with a coffee then you have another and another .

Another great suggestion are truffles, they are not that hard to make and are a great hit. I made them one year, one batch with bailey's one batch with Kalhua, one with orange liqueur...YUM....All you do is melt chocolate with a bit of cream, add your liqueur and let the chocolate cool to harden. Roll in your hands to make balls then roll in either icing sugar, cocoa, chocolate sprinkles.

I have a lot of great recipes from baking classes that I have taken but they are all in weighed measures instead of cups. Please let me know and I wil gladly post them. (It is actually worth it to buy a scale and work this way, way faster and more precise)

gotta play, It doesn't really matter too much when. I'm off two weekends a month and off other wise during the week. My weekends off in Dec are the 15th and 22nd but I'm off during the week other wise. We can have everything made and prepakaged for however many people that are in it and then set a date that is good for everyone to do the exchange and pick a place. We can bring a box to carry our goodies home. How does that sound? If anyone has any other suggestions let me know I'm open. If someone can't make it we can make arrangements to have their items brought to the exchange and pack their cookies in a box and drop them off or have them picked up.

Can you tell me more about it? How many of the one kind of cookie/bar would we have to make? When are you looking to do this? My mom and I would both be in for something like this, I think. It'd really be nice to have some different treats this year!

I love these cookie exchanges we usually do one every year too.

Sara, As to how many to make we will have to wait and see how many people are interested. So far it looks like about 11 of us with you and your mother so if thats all we get then we would make 11 dozen of one type of dessert packaged up in one dozen packs on a christmas plate or a baggie or whatever bring all of it to one place and everyone exchanges and gets 11 dozen different christmas desserts! I will let everyone know how many to do if we give it maybe another two weeks to see if anyone else is interested. We will pick a time and place that is good for everyone, hopefully, and do the exchange maybe two weeks or a week before christmas. How does that sound? Ann

the recipe for the fried pastry:
250-300 gr flour (I think this is aqpprox 2 cups)
3 egg
30 gr sugar (2TBSP)
25 gr butter (maybe one TBSP or so)
5 TBSP sweetened condensed milk
pinch of salt

oil for frying
icing sugar

to make dough, beat eggs with sugar, melted butter condensed milk and salt. Hand beat until foamy
add flour , knead well

let dough rest for 1 hour in a cool spot

cut in workable pieces and roll out as thinly as possible pull with hands to make more thin
Fry one at a time, as it fries it makes wrinkles
Sprinkle with icing sugar while still warm

**When I make these I generally roll out a bigger piece of dough the size of my cutting board then I cut this bigget piece into smaller pieces. Usually I like a size tht is approx 2" x 3" or so but you can do what you want. The I gently take each piece and gently sttretch it more being careful not to rip it then plop it in the oil**

Everyone loves these! You can make them ahead, wait until they cool completely and store them in an airtight container. I guess you can pop them in the oven to crisp them up before serving but there is generally no need

I hope that you enjoy them /ubbthreads/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wavey.gif

ooo, i like the recipe card idea! great.

should we start posting what we are making soon? that way if someone else is making the same thing we have time to think of something different. (even if everyones shortbread is different, i still wouldnt want 12 dozen shortbreads!, lol)

my special cookies that i would like to make are 'soft chocolate balls', basically cream cheese and chocolate with various assorted flavorings and coatings

So far we have chewy cheesecake cookies, fudge PB and chocolate, lemon tea cookies, tye plates, soft flavored chocolate balls and russian tea balls, and coconut jam tarts
I think we had about 10 people in the exchange but hopefully will get an exact number shortly. If everyone will add what they want to make we can figure out exactly how many. Thanks ann

We will just pick a day on that weekend have our how ever many dozen cookies packaged and ready in one dozen each packs. So if there is 10 people you would have 10 dozen of your pre packaged cookies in separate packs and we exchange them. Bring something to put them in to carry home and we can have coffee or whatever. We do have to decide where to do it though. Someones house or where ever. I used to do this at work so it was a work setting that we did it before.

My place is downtown as well...And theres a big parking spot across the road from me!!
Ive had the last 2 meet n greets here and theyve gone well...

If it is at a downtown or close to downtown area I think that would be the best cuz some of us have kids and no one to babysit them and so it would be easier for us to have somewhere to walk to thats not too far (for some of us who don't drive that is)...

Im just putting my 2 cents in though lol

tasma
11-20-2005, 04:29 PM
One dozen for each person in the exchange. right now there is about 8 confirmed with what they are making including yourself so you would make 7 dozen of your cookies unless you want a dozen for your self. separately place one dozen in each package or plate. I bought christmas plates and I will cover each plate with one dozen with christmas saran wrap. Bring to the exchange and when you leave you will leave with at least 7 dozen different cookies or bars. This is just an example there will probably be a few more people involved so you would have to make probably a few more dozen.

JerDawg
11-21-2005, 11:16 AM

Yes, I am making the fudge wreaths that were featured on Oprah with racheal ray just in a smaller version. If anyone else has what they are going to make, please leave it soon so we all have an idea of how many we have to make for the exchange. Its getting pretty close to the exchange time and people need to start getting their ingredients together. 3 weeks from this weekend. We also need to decide on a location for the exchange, someone mentioned that downtown would be better for them so if we could decide on that too it would make it easier for everyone. Thanks Ann

i am central, and i will offer my house, if necassary, but i noticed some others offered up their houses first.

i have lots of pets, so if that is a problem for anyone... (i am very very careful when baking, about the pets - so dont worry)

personally, i would prefer the 17th, as we always go out to goulais on the sundays, but i can make an exception.

/ubbthreads/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wavey.gif Pattycakes you've got a PM to

Old Garden River Road thats out near Trunk Rd somewhere right? That might be to far for some people that have no transportation as well as kids theyve gotta bring along cuz of no sitter

tasma
12-03-2005, 01:01 PM
Old Garden river rd is in between the old K Mart plaza and Walmart. Thanks for the suggestion Karen C but I think more centrally located would be easier for the people with no transportation, unless they can be picked up by someone in the area. Patty cakes you said your place is available, would everyone else be able to get down to your place though? I people have kids are they able to bring them?

BBydoll yes you have to post your treat soon so everyone can know what the other is bringing if you can I don't think it would be a hardship if you made it a surprise.

did you see the posting that sweet tart made. it was a seperate thread. she said she could have at her house, no pets, central location.

check out her posting. i think she said, the 17th around 200oclock.

shes off northst. middle of the hill.

i was the only one to respond, but i dont think anyone else saw it?

tasma
12-04-2005, 11:46 AM
Yep your absolutely right, I didn't see it. North Street is pretty central and fairly easy to get to and the 17th at 2:00pm is good for me. Anyone have objections? I can pick people up that don't have transportation too and from and I'm sure others with vehicles could probably do the same. I will put my reply on her thread as well.

no problem, the more the merrier. It was funny because I looked at the name Countess Bathory and thought who is that! Kittie Korpse. I have to get an acurate count of whose in and whose not. I would hate to show up one dozen short!
Ok I have to go to work but this is who I have right now.
Karen C, Mdrsbabygirl, me, sweettart, pattycakes, kitca, special K, gotta play, Countess, Katste 11, bbydollnboo, and I sent pms to Sara and timbit to see if they are still coming. So thats 11 people plus sara and timbit if they are in. I don't know if they are because I haven't seen any posts lately from them. If everyone is in then we make 11 dozen of whatever.

CountessBathory

I was wondering how everyone would feel about making an extra dozen to donate to the Proulx Family benefit on Sunday Dec 18? I would be happy to bring them to the benefit, or I could have a manager come and pick them up at the cookie exchange.
Let me know.
Thanks
