View Full Version : Question for diabetes sufferers????

My boss has type 2 and isn't on injections, just diet and pills.

Hes finding that is levels are getting really high in the morning, about 11:00 am. He's eating a breakfast of cereal that he says has very low sugar. Cherioo's or shreddies,but his sugar was 15.7 this morning.
He normally runs about 6 or 7.

Any suggestions as to what might be causing the spikes?

He was just there, and saw his doctor, thats the thing. He takes his sugar regularily and keeps track. He talked to his doc about the spikes ( he sees Dr. Farar (sp) hes supposed to be a diabetes speciallist) He didnt' even change his dosage or anything.

I'm concerned because I know that's pretty high, but 1 hour later he was back down to in the 7 range, he didn't eat or drink anything either.

I don't know anything about this disease, thats why I'm asking for suggestions.
What about milk? Will it send his sugar up?

Tell him when he eats carbs he should be having a protien with it

Not sure if he is aware but there is a dietician he can see that is covered and can help a lot with his diet

I believe it is with the diabeties clinic

Well if he just saw his Dr and he is okay with that. Milk has sugars in it, depending on what type of milk there is more or less sugar content. The group health centre has a great diabetes program give them a call or the public health unit. They should be able to help.

ya he should see a dietician
i believe he needs to have protein and not just cereal alone

I have suggested the dietician as well. I think he needs to learn what he shouldn't be eating.

Thanks Ladies. I'm going to talk to him again about it tomorrow and failing that, I'll talk to his Daughter that always works.

I know the diabetic clinic was in the Wellington Square Mall not sure if it is still there or not

I know that if I had a Tim Hortons sandwhich It put my levels up over 11,I went to the clinic in Welligton square they helped me with choosing foods and snacks to eat,Things I thought were good for me we not.i also found that the drink(Glurcenera)A bit expensive but very helpful.when I couldn't keep my sugar under control.

See he thinks he knows what he should be eating, but he has a sandwich everyday at lunch and I'm sure its chock full of fat, mayo ect.... I just know so little about it that I dont' know what to say to him except that I though a visit to the dietition might be a good thing.

Tell him to buy some Glucerna,I thought the same thing,When my levels got low I would be sick and have the shakes, Does his wife make all the food?Maybe she should go. I know I took my hubby and He was like a drill sergent watching what I ate,

HIs wife passed away almost a year ago. So his lifestyle has changed a lot. He's all by himself and you know what happens to people - especially men when they loose their wives. He really doesn't (in my opinion) take very good care of himself.

Thats one of the reasons I'm so worried about him.

Yes men don't cook like we do.I know bread is the worse,He is lucky to have you..Will he go to the clinic? Maybe google and print him off some info and leave it on his desk.My mom is alone and she doesnt cook either It drives me insane, As I have 3 meals a day ..

IF he won't go I'll talk to his daughter. She's wonderful, and she does alot for him, I'm sure if I went to her with this she would insist he go as well.

He's probably just grabbing a sandwich when he's hungry. I told him he should try having an omlet or something different for breakfast. He was going to try something else tomorrow and see what happens.

Well we discussed the idea that he had been eating too many carbs and not enough protien. This morning he had eggs for breakfast (no cholestoral issue for him) and at lunch his sugar was at 5.1

So I think part of his problem was not enough protien, I did suggest to him that he should go back to the dietition.

Carbs can be as bad as sugars. Having him go and see a dietion is good maybe his daughter could go with.
If you can convince him to make an appt at the GHC tha might be the best.

mayo also has sugar, you are told not to eat processed meat and there ae a certain amount of carbs that you are aloud at each meal the dietician will tell him that and if he does eat a sandwich i hope that it is on brown bread it has less sugar than white

tell him to check out the glycemic index. if he has internet he can check it out online. it shows how the foods we eat turn into sugars in the body. carbs/starches are bad for that. it also says that fats slow the process down.

complex carbs are best: brown bread, brown rice, brown pasta mixed with protien. or ust lots of protien and veggies too.

poor man, losing his wife. hope he gets it under control.

I am a type 2 diabetic as well. My doctor told me that your insulin level goes up for about an hour after you eat as your body tries to process the food you have just eaten. I was told to check my sugar an hour to hour and a half after I eat and if my level is normal than it is okay. She said as long as I am not eating wrong...the spike is normal as long as the level goes back down in the time frame of an hour to two hours. Hope this helps.
