April 29, 2008 XP SP3 will be available from Microsoft download center. It's about time!

I heard there was going to be a few visual enhancements with SP3. Is this true or is it just a bunch of updates.

There is nothing really new about SP3, just rolled up all the previous updates for the most part.

Quote from MS's official white paper... "Service Pack 3 includes previously released Windows XP updates, including security updates and hotfixes. It also includes select out-of-band releases and a small number of new enhancements, which do not significantly change customersí experience with the operating system"

The beta looked no different. Just more bloatware.

There's nothing in SP3, if your computer is up to date, there will be nothing new for you at all......

Exactly, I staying away from SP3. I've happy with XP SP2 with the updates and my customizations and even happier dual booting with Ubuntu (although I still need Windows for games et al.)

I think it would be good to wait it out and see how many machines blue screen after installing SP3. I am perfectly ok with SP2.

SP3 is much needed to increase the lifespan of XP for corporate users. There's nothing worse then installing XP and having to download +100 MB worth of patches to get it up to date.

I am going to reinstall the original XP and then apply SP3 to ensure I get the best performance.

You can slipstream, but your right, it's nice to do one update then 6 with a reboot in between each one.

I'm just saying to the people that think SP3 is chalk full of new stuff like visual enhancements ect...that it's just an update roll up for the most part.

No, it's more a collection of updates. But great for a fresh install starting from the original XP without a service pack.

XP SP3 is not very big at all and has no major effect on XP.

Yet more insightful information from the computer god.

I think it's fairly big, since it holds all the fixes since XP came out + some extra things not released yet.

Ah well its not that big as it only has a few new updates in it. Basically its SP2 with some updates in it, nothing major.

The [censored] pulled it!

Microsoft Pulls XP SP3, Delays Release Indefinitely

The pack was pulled because it breaks or otherwise compromises the Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System (RMS). The RMS application is relatively uncommon and is chiefly used by small/midsize businesses, making Microsoft's decision to pull the pack seem a bit unusual.

Apparently the RMS glitch applies to Vista's first service pack as well. Unlike XP SP3, Microsoft will not be pulling Vista SP1, but it is halting automatic downloads of the pack. Says a Microsoft spokesman:

http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=11635

As usual, a Vista bug is causing all the problems. Where's Ballmer when you need him eh?

I think I'll wait awhile before installing SP3 if ever. It seems Microsoft has Beta testers - they call them customers.

I was able to directly get it from Microsoft. It's amazing how many files it replaced. See no difference for better or worse, but that is not necessarily bad.
