He sure doesn't show many leadership qualities. He makes excuses and whines about the officiating. That is the last thing a leader does.

Henrik Zetterberg has shown he is the better all-around player. Crosby is a media creation, who puts up big numbers in a relatively easy East. Look how Detroit is making Sid look very average.

Detroit has made the entire team look average not just Crosby.Detroits puck control/positional play (which go hand and hand) will be the thorn in the side of the Penguins.

Crosby could do less whining but that's where the mental toughness comes into play.If he does mature we'll see a lot less whining and a greater focus when he's under pressure.
As for his leadership qualities, like you say,the whining has to go.It can't be a good quality to display in front of your team.

GenX
06-02-2008, 08:35 AM
The Pens have the look of a future championship team, but one who is at least two years away from the Cup.

They are very reminiscent of the Detroit teams of the mid-nineties: on the cusp of greatness, but not quite there yet.

Malkin is mirroring Sergei Federov's playoff performances of the early-nineties; the goaltending is good, but not great; the captain needs to learn more about leadership; the team needs to learn how to lose and face adversity before they can win. Very similar to the Wings growing pains before they rattled off three Cups in seven years (and very possibly four Cups in eleven years).

Detroit has played through so much adversity in the last fifteen years they actually thrive on it; the Pens face adversity and wilt.

ya, it's been a heck of a series tho, detroit has dominated, and is no doubt the best team this season, but the Penguins keep showing it this series, but as far as consistency goes, the Wings own it. There were a few sketchy goalie-interference calls last night, but I was excited to see pittsburg score (and to see the game end!) I don't really care who wins, I'd like to see a game 7 tho.

It's no longer about the money Barry. As RW said they have a cap which allows every team to spend the same amount.Detroit has become a power house for several reasons. An amazing scouting staff is the first clog in this system. They have the ability to find players( in the lower rounds) that their able to mold to their system thus giving them a balanced team within the cap.

Detroit also has one of the best GM's and coaches in the league. They have the players believing in their system making them a tough club to beat.
I'm not a Detroit fan, but as a fan of hockey I love to see a team execute a system in an almost effortless manner. There's not many coaches in the league (if any at present)that have had their team playing up to the level of the Wings.

Win or lose,Detroit is the better club and money is not a factor in their performance.

Coach
06-03-2008, 10:27 AM
I have to agree about Detroit being the better team...but they do spend more money then say a team like Chicago or say Columbus...I believe theur payroll is in the top 5 in the league...but you have to realize Babcock knows how to win....with the exception of some early and late game butterflies...which cost them the game (and a terrific Fleury in net) he did what he needed to do to win and that is Bench the American...by this I mean Chelios...Babcock knows that to win you need a good mix of Canadian boys and Europeans...bench the American and all will work out....ohh...don't give me the injury line either as he is listed as day to day with a sore pinky I believe. Either way he was a Healthy Scratch last night...

riggs
06-03-2008, 11:24 AM
There's no doubt Chelios is a healthy scratch.I believe he's been scratched for part of the last series and all of this one.If Babcock has a winning combination on the ice he won't change it. "don't fix what isn't broken"

Detroit may very well be in the top 5 for payroll. My point to Barry was the days of throwing money to buy a team are gone because of the cap.GM's need to be more intelligent to put the winning combination on the ice.

Jack Butler
06-03-2008, 02:25 PM
Leave Barry alone.
He is right, again!
The Wing lets say have not wasted it, but they are spending a lot more than most.
The millions that put on or close to the cap are the most important and impossible for a lot of teams.
The ability to win and the want to win is the difference right now.
The shot on the game sheet show 58-32 Detroit!
The facts are, Detroit had 58 on net and 31 blocked shots by the Penguins.
Detroit blocked only 12 with the Pens 32 shots on net.
When a guy like Malone, after returning from his second broken nose this series, continues to drop in front of them, it speaks volumes to why the Pens won.
As for coaching, Babcock is letting them play.
He sends them out, but they decide on adjustments.
He is responsible for the system, but not the adjustments!
He as much as said that himself.

Jack, isn't Riggs funny??

Player salary cap. OK, I understand that.

Is there a coach salary cap?? Is there a scout salary cap?? (or a cap on the little perks that might induce a player to come on board??) Is there an advertising cap?? How about a cap on non-salary perks for the players???

There are lots of ways for a team to spend money to be the best.

Do I know much about hockey?? Nope. But in any business, you have to spend to be successful.

Teams consist of players and players have salaries. Any money spent on a player falls into player salaries. There are no "gifts". Well, maybe in baseball, but the other sports with a cap have strict rules and unless you have documented proof that a team has broken these rules, lets stick to reality. If you can.

Just funnin' ya.

I already suggested several areas where team management might spend more money to enhance their profitablility/winnning.

I'm not talking about anything illegal.

If a team spends a bazillion on an experienced coach, where another team can't afford it, they simply have a better chance to win.

If a team spends money on elite, luxurious dressing rooms, or private spectator boxes where the player's families can enjoy the game, they will improve their chances of getting the best players. Because even the best players realize that money isn't everything.

Salaries paid to players are not the whole story of the success of a team.

oneof3
06-04-2008, 07:56 PM
Well, by all accounts, the Leafs do all of that as well or better than any other team. Where did they finish the last 3 years? Detroit likely has the best management system in the NHL, yet they don't spend anywhere near what other teams do on their single GM. Colorado and the Rangers spend a ton on their scouts, yet neither are near the top in prospects that are considered bluechip. Spending money and spending it wisely usually don't spend much time in the same place. Posters here can say what they want about Detroit, but, they are the stick other teams should measure themselves by. They continually draft late, yet pick great players and prospects and make shrewd decisions on all fronts. They are a mid market team that thinks like a small market team and plays like a big market team.

All it means is the odds makers got it right, sort of!
I wonder if Detroit covered the spread?
Probably not!
That would mean that Pittsburgh is better than even odds makers thought!
Detroit's abilities to dominate the puck possession, should have produced higher scores.
No question, the best team won, with the most imports and a non Canadian captain.
Lidstrom is probably the best import out of all imports, for this to have happened too.
I would have thought that this would have happened by now, considering how long ago the Canadian coach migrated to other countries to share the wealth!
