I believe the property was given to be an experimental farm to develop money making crops for Northern Ontario. For example the Soo could be at the forefront of ethonol production but none of the city councils had any vision.

That's why the baseball fields (not the softball fields) are located on Sinclair Yards, the home of Sault Minor Baseball. ( http://www.sooball.com )
