There is a part designed to fix that exact spot.
It's called a cab corner.
Trio should have one.
To do it right you have to take the box bolts out and slide the box back.
Mig a small spot on the bolt head.
Box bolts are like stove bolt with square shoulders under the head.
Removing old rusty box bolts will tend round the square holes meant to hold the box bolt in place.
Welding a portion of the head to the box floor and makes this procedure much easier with an older truck.
Now you can use an impact to remove the nuts or a long handled power bar and no one has to hold the head, way easier!
A simple grinding and it can be removed or just leave it.
I'm not a welder, but have restored many vehicles.
It worked for me, good luck.

thanx jack I thought there was a prefab corner available somewhere. Can the thing be epoxied to the good steel?

There is a product meant for that.
The prep means you have to create a recess a flange around the cut out area on the truck to be able to place the new piece flush with the panel.
If it doesn't matter, just make sure both surfaces are clean degreased metal. It will not look like much, so....
Either way you will trim the CC to fit.
Use some have paper to make a pattern than transfer it on to the CC.
Hows the other side?
Often the other one is in the same or close shape.
