GSP vs Penn
Lyoto Machida Vs. Thiago Silva
Stephan Bonnar Vs. Jon Jones
Karo Parisyan Vs. Dong Hyun Kim
Nate Diaz Vs. Clay Guida

The last two will be good fights, don't know about the rest.
GSP will stop Penn in their rematch.
I'll get back to you on the rest.

I am looking forward to the BJ-GSP fight. I like both fighters but George is my fav. I think they both can win it but I have to give the edge to GSP, he is just too good right now.

Jan 31st, can't wait!

UFC Primetime: St-Pierre vs Penn Part 1
On Spike Jan 14 2009 10:00pm
I think there are 3 parts.
Like the HBO series 24/7, it follows the fighters the last weeks leading up to the fight.

Thanks fo rthe reminder, Jack. I almost forgot about the Primetime specials.

Off topic slightly: We are considering going to Ohio for UFC 96, but that card sure is looking weak so far. A few interesting fights, but no sign of a legitimate main event yet.

Here's an early presser.
Silva vs Machida should be a good fight as well, someones O has gotta go.
Nice......

I watched that special last night and I gotta say I like BJ Penn a little less after it. The most annoying part of it was when he said "I am going to fight to the death, I'm ready to die in there, I am going to try to kill you George"

I just thought it was a ridiculous thing to say...but its pre-fight banter so it is what it is...

Jack Butler

I watched as well.
GSP looked fantasic.......I mean fantastic!
Penn can say what he wants, he ain't beating him.
I would say we are about to see the best GSP yet.
What's with Dana White checking up on BJ's training progress?
That doesn't sound good, no one is that naturally gifted!
......just more hype?

In a lot of ways I don't think this should be a title fight. It should have been billed as a "super fight" instead. Especially since BJ lost his last two WW fights. Not that I don't think George can/will win the fight but if he doesn't it screws up the LW division.

I was reading that IF BJ wins then Thiago Alves gets a title shot in spring sometime. BJ would have to stay at 170ish to prep for that fight. That means no LW title shot for anyone till late 09. Not the best situation for the contenders in that division.

I actually would love a GSP Thiago fight, more in some ways that the BJ fight. But I am still pumped about this one as well. If GSP wins I get the Alves match up as well so that would be a bonus.

I agree.
You don't get the Championship until you are successful defending it?
You would be an Interim Champ until the successful defense.
And, what about mandatories?
Part of the problem is that UFC fighters are under contract with the UFC, not free agents.
Dana White is Don King and Jose Sulaiman.
He owns the fighters and the WBA, WBC and the IBF.
Love the sport.......but this is a big issue, to me.
Let promoters have it and let the fighters be free agents.
It would create something a lot different than what we have at present.

I watched episode two and again I find it so hard to keep liking BJ. I found myself hoping GSP would knock him out early just to shut him up.

Part of me wants it to be a 5 rounder but a quick destructive knock out or forcing BJ to tap would be just as good at this point.

Good article. I have read a few fight breakdowns over the last few days and they all are pretty much in line with this one. If it ends early its BJ t it ends late or goes to the judges its George.

I actually watched an interview on Sportsnet today and BJ was a lot more likable. Though I still want George to make a point I don't mind if it is a long fight rather than a short one with George KOing BJ.

Rumor has it that GSP cut over 15 lbs. to weigh in.
It would be interesting to get him on a scale before the fight.
It has to be difficult to train that hard and not increase your mass.
As a result fighters end up in higher weight divisons.
Can you say, Silva vs GSP?
It a natural, unless Silva moves up first.
If, GSP vs Penn is huge....GSP vs Silva would be gargantuan.
Of course, he has to beat Penn first....I know one at a time.
GSP wins in third round by referee stoppage.
BJ will pay for the bi tch remark!

id like to see silva (anderson) move up to 205 and fight machito. that would be an excellent battle. since machito has just as much technical skill as silva does it wouldnt be a second round finish.

Boondock
02-01-2009, 03:04 PM
That fight will never ever happen. Silva and Machida are like brothers and it's actually the thing that's keeping Anderson away from the 205 division. He say's "The 205 belt belongs to Lyoto"

Jack Butler
02-01-2009, 03:22 PM
And pay he did!
Who is the bi tch now!
THAT....was a good ole' as s whoppin.....
Penn looked terrified before the fight.
He picked a good fight with his mouth, but couldn't back it up.
If not for a brief bit in the third, Penn had no offense, St. Pierre was relentless.
The wrestling and tie ups early, to fatigue BJ's shoulders, to make his boxing less effective later was brilliant and very successful.
It shows a different level of completeness.
Machida was better than advertised......Evans has his hands FULL.
Not a mark on that guy...How good can he get?
Gotta love combat sports...THAT was a good night!

Than, maybe Silva will go down, or GSP will go up?

It's pretty much set in stone that if George can take out Thiago Alves then his next fight will be against Anderson Silva in the sickest fight ever. This sport is insane with all these champions fighting each other.

That was a great night of fights for me, personally. GSP and Machida are my two favourite fighters.
Hopefully last night will end the complaints about Machida not finishing fights. He has never lost a round in the UFC, but he doesn't get a title shot because of his cautious approach. Some do find him boring, but I love the way he uses karate as his main fighting style. He fights unlike any other fighter in the UFC - unusual but very effective..

And after last night, I am starting to think GSP just might have a chance against Silva. As good as George is, he just keeps getting better every fight.

What did you guys think of John Jones? Only 21, in his second UFC fight and he has the balls to throw spinning elbows and roundhouse kicks at Bonnar. Keep your eyes on this kid, he's got a long career ahead of him.

Looks like BJ and George are talking about a third fight. After the beating BJ took in the last fight I think this would be a complete waste of time.

I think BJ is just trying to save some face after getting brutalized when he talked such a good game before hand.

i think the best solution to this vaseline problem is to take out the round system entirely and make it like it used to be. It would test each fighter even more and eliminate saves by the bell.

Boondock is right!
The UFC went the 3 and 5 round format and 3 judges to gain acceptance in the USA.
It use to be a 16 man tournament and the winner was the last man standing.
That meant you had to win 4 fights in one night....big difference!

Here's something on UFC 97 in Montreal.

Sources apparently informed Sportsnet.ca that the QAC is considering changes such as disallowing elbow and knee strikes, requiring the use of a smaller cage than the UFC Octagon, and possibly forcing the referee to stop the bout if a fighter is knocked down from standing due to a strike in order to check and see if the fighter is able to continue.

http://www.mmaweekly.com/absolutenm/templates/dailynews.asp?articleid=8173&zoneid=13

There is a lot of trouble regarding UFC 97 in Montreal scheduled for 4/18….However, due to the riot at a show in Quebec promoted by Stephane Patry where fans threw beer cans and bottles…the Alcohol, Races & Game commission is saying that UFC can come as long as they ban elbow or knee strikes.
