A brief description of the problem, please? Also, what type of water softener is it IE; reverse osmosis, in line, with or without ultra violet. How long have you experienced your problem and what have you already done?

The timer doesn't seem to be working. A hum is coming from the timer motor, so its powered but not advancing the cycle. Every so often there is a clicking sound like a gear tooth is not quite engaging and passing by the next tooth.

Depending on the age of the unit you might want to change the timer out. It's very straight for ward as there are only two wires and even those may be of a plug in variety. Timers are gear driven and do wear, for the gears are either plastic or fibre in construction and not usually rebuild able.

I had a water conditioner for about 13 years. It needed to be dissassemled and cleaned at least once a year, all the valves etc. I may have replaced a timer once.

Depending on you level of understanding you might wish to by pass the timer and run direct(jump the circut) just to confirm it is in fact the timer.
