I didn't get the macro lens...yet. I did buy a set of Kenko extension tubes however.

For this set up, I decided to play around with lighting, trying to make it fairly even.

I placed a flash and set it as slave with a lumiquest softbox, on the right. I placed a smaller slaved flash on a handy pizza box on the right pointed downwards. I then used another flash on the camera with another lumiquest small softbox. I was experimenting with the extension tubes as well. I used tissue paper for a background. Here are a few coin shots to show the results.

American penny.

Canadian nickel.

The detail is great, but the white still looks off to me a bit, ie in the penny, the white tissue looks more gray than white. Curious if a different colour background would make the difference. Just a thought though.
The quarter had good lighting, good contrast on the coin itself, the textures are well displayed.
Thank you for sharing your lighting though, interesting setup.
After all my comments, I also realized I am looking at this on my laptop with the screwed up colour, so take my comments with a grain of salt. I will check this out when I get home this week again.

No. The colour of the penny is off on the first one. The exposure on that one was off, but I did like the penny itself.

Here is a more inline one with the other two.

EDIT: I should add that I hand held these...I know...not the smartest thing to do, but I was trying to find the sweet spot for the extension tubes. FYI, I used the 20mm extension tube on the Sigma 28-135 macro in macro mode.

I think overall, I like the lighting this gives me.

Just a thought, use background material that is flat and wrinkle free.

it was a kleenex you used IM sure. which Lol to me always has a tinge (sp) of color they are never pure white!!! and while usuing a flash im sure would radiate (sp) thourgh the kleenex picking up on background color also!!

That is very true. I was going for an off white textured effect to begin with. I also figured it might be close enough to an 18% gray card to help in exposure.
