can you really catch pacific salmon here?

Too many salmon nets big fine

An Angus, Ontaio man has been fined $2,250 for having too many Pacific salmon.

Dawson Collins, 52, pleaded guilty to having 18 fish more than the legal limit.

The court heard that on September 22, officers from the Ontario ministries of agriculture and rural affairs, transportation, environment and natural resources, and from the Ontario Provincial Police, conducted a joint road check in the Blind River area.

Collins was one of those checked.

Officers found he had 23 Pacific salmon he had caught in the St. Mary's River at Sault Ste. Marie.

The legal limit is five.

Michigan DNR stocked them years ago to control Alwife populations and since they grow faster than lake trout they would hold up against the thriving sea lamprey population which is currently being controlled by US and Canadian federal agencies....

There are some Atlantics in the river but they're kind of rare and the limit on them is 1.

There are 3 Pacific Species of salmon in the Great Lakes. They were as mentioned stocked to control alewife populations and they thrived. You can catch Chinook (King,Tyee), Pink and Coho (Silver) salmon in the St. Mary's as well as any other of the Great Lakes.
These fish are Pacific salmon, however, they have never been in the Pacific Ocean. The only species of ocean run salmon that swim in the Great Lakes are Atlantic Salmon (only one species, so its known as Atlantic salmon.

And just to clarify, he was charged with havnig too many "Pacific Salmon" because the three speces of pacific salmon all count towards the same limiit. You can keep 5 pacific salmon of any combination ie. you can catch 2 coho, 1 king and 2 pinks or 5 chinooks or 3 coho and 2 pinks, etc. So if you got more than 5 'Pacifics', you are over your limiit.
