That wasn't quite the point of my post, but those things are cool.

Problem is there's little point to improving gas mileage if the unit to make it happen costs twice as much as the gas over the life of the car.

Hmmmm?
Compared to what, not having it?
Is the new technology free?
It turns a 3 speed into a 6 speed with od, so.....
Mazda years ago and recently Ford used system that resembles what is used in the snowmobile.
Basically using 2 clutches and a metal woven belt.
All you feel is constant acceleration or deceleration, no up shifts or down shifts.
Proper application provides a continuous, optimum gear ratio.
There was also a braking system involved for starting on a incline.
What is with transmissions?
Development costs are sometimes shared between 2 or even sometimes 3 rivals?
With virtual programing used to accelerate R&D, you would think you could go it alone.
All of it is expensive.
