I was thinking how some people including myself like to share the odd photo. So, I thought why not make a thread where we can showcase and brag a bit. I don't always want to start a whole new thread just for one picture and we have a thread to post pictures of ourselves and challenges that are usually theme specific. Here is my first picture I got this past weekend on a fishing trip. My bf was unloading the 4wheeler when I spotted 2 butterflies, I just slid my finger under its feet and it sat on my finger long enough for me to snap this picture.

that pic of your daughter in my opinion would make an excellent art piece or even magazine shot. You caught the moment of innocence perfectly there.
Beautiful shot of your little girl Lizzardskills, just beautiful.

I wanna know how to make a pic black and white and then make something in it color like you little girl pic. How do you do that?

My camera has a special feature on it. I can aim and set what ever color I want to highlight. It is my FAVORITE feature!

One way is to use a magnetic lasso tool to trace the objects perimeter. Then you can invert the selection so that everything else is selected, then turn the photo to black and white. What was originally selected will remain its natural colour.
Here is an example I just did using Photoshop.

Where do you get photoshop and how much is it?
Chako
06-15-2007, 12:21 AM
You can get Adobe products at any computer store. The larger local stores tend to have them in stock (Staples, Future Shop).
There are 2 versions of Photoshop:
- Photoshop Elements 5. Costs around $150 or less, and is all that the average home user would ever need.
- Photoshop CS3. Costs around $600+, and does far more then Elements can, but most of which is rather directed towards the graphic artist, professional user, etc.
There are alternatives to both programs. Corel makes a nice program called Paint Shop Pro 11 that can compete with CS3 on many levels for around the price of Elements. Microsoft also makes a super easy to use program called Picture It! designed for step by step ease of use. It isn't as good as the other programs though.
I was foolin' around with Photoshop a few years back and got this. This is my gurl Chrissy @ Rankin Pow wow, she had her hair all in lil' braids. The paint on her face is in the original pic, I just coloured the beads and dreamcatcher.

I used Photoshop to do it much like the directions I stated previously. It is rather easy to do. Lizzardskills has a special effect mode in her camera that does it automatically I think from what she posted.
What software do you have?

Well Andre, I gave GIMP 2 a try, seeing as the price was right! But either I need to buy photo editing for dummies, or I find this program a little complicated. I'll take some time to try to get the hang of it, it just seems so different from what I have used in the past. Which of course wasn't anything to special anyway.

It's very similar to photoshop:
* Intelligent Scissors are similar to the Magnetic Lasso
* rectangular, elliptical and lasso features are identical
* dropper, fill, gradient, pencil, paintbrush, eraser, airbrush, clone stamper, blur or sharpen, smudge, and dodge or burn features are identical
* flip, rotate, scale, crop, zoom, move, foreground+background color swatch, layers, history, gradients, and drop shadow features are identical
Either one takes a good while to learn. For what most people(including myself) do it's a good free alternative to photoshop.
Stick with it and learn and you'll be happy. /ubbthreads/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Instead of the Gimp, you could also try Gimpshop. Gimpshop is a hacked version of the Gimp that has a graphical user interface that is similar to Photoshop. Also, the majority of the terminology unique to the Gimp have been renamed to the Photoshop equivalent. One can follow most Photoshop tutorials in Gimpshop without too many problems. Gimpshop is free but only available for Windows and Mac. Surprisingly, I don't think there is a Linux version yet.

Out at St. Joe's Island......
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j96/lizzardskills/IMG_0051.jpg
This little Lady built a nest in the middle of the parking lot at the marina. We had parked beside her nest not knowing she was there until I went to get my sweater and she came out wings flapping and squawking! She had 3 little eggs in her nest, but I didn't have my camera at the time(it was in the boat). On the way out I snapped a few pictures from a distance. Some people had put larger rocks and logs around her nest so no one runs it over.

Can you help me lol. I tried it in photoshop -inverted it but still the whole thing turns b&w when i pick that...did I do something wrong?
Chako
07-07-2007, 10:02 PM
Ok here is a step by step way of doing it using Photoshop CS2 (Elements should be the same way or very close)
1. Open photo
2. Select "magnetic lasso" tool and carefully trace around object you want coloured. The Delete key will remove the anchor points if you go off target...retrace if needed. Double click when you reached your starting point. This will create a moving dashed boundary. At this point, anything you do will be applied to what is inside that boundary.
3.Go to the "Select" pull down menu and click on "Inverse". This will select everything else but what was originally selected.
4. To turn the background black and white you can do this several ways. A. "Image" pull down menu, "desaturate". B. "Image" pull down menu, "Adjustment", "gradient map" and select a grey scale gradient or a black and white scale gradient. Either way will cause the selected background to turn black and white.
5. Now go back up to "Select" pull down menu and click on "deselect". This will eliminate the bound boxes.
If done right, you will have black and white the background and kept the originally selected area its natural colour.
Hope this helps.

I have been using gimp for a while now, and didn't see and intelligent scissors, and wasn't even able to figure out how to crop a picture. I spent a long time playing with it too. /ubbthreads/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif Maybe I'll get gimp 2 and see if it's better.
Chako
07-07-2007, 10:41 PM
I have never used Gimp. I have read that the user interface leaves a lot to be desired.
Here is a demo photo and how I did it using CS2.
http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r207/Chako_photo/_MG_8064smallbw.jpg
1. Open photo.
2. Using the magnetic lasso tool, trace around one bird.
3. Go to the "layers" pull down menu and select "new" and then to "Layer as copy". This will make a new layer of the one bird.
4. Repeat the above with the other bird. When done, you should see your background layer, and 2 separate layers containing each one bird.
5. Click on the background layer and turn to black and white using your method of choice. In this example, I turned it to black and white and used a yellow photography filter effect on the water.
6. Click on each bird layer. You can auto level; tweak the birds to your liking.
7. Save the photo as a Jpeg and you’re done. For fancier layer work, it may be necessary to select the "layers" pull down menu, and find the "flatten image" option. This will merge all the layers back into one photo for easy saving. In this case, there was no need to flatten the image to merge the layers into one photo.

You could try to blot out that green grass by playing around with the colour eyedropper tool and your opacity levels. If you make the colours transparent enough, you could change that green grass in the wings to more of a background colour.
