for those of you with softmodded wii's, DONT UPDATE!

They've finally added SDHC support up to 32GB and also the ability to load wiiware/VC games from SD card. Cool for sure, but it also disables softmod elements. Which ones, im not sure at this moment.

I used the Twilight hack to softmod my Wii but use the wad manager to load downloaded games. I am sure updating would disable the wad manager.

sure will, and it'll kill the twilight princess hack.

I dont need the Twilight princess hack anymore. The wad manager does it for me. I hope it wont disable the homebrew channel

it does not disable the homebrew channel, but blocks a new install of it (obviously)...im still waiting to see how it affects the loaders.

Handy update, now able to have all our VC/WiiWare ready to go without re-downloading.
Wii onboard memory was too small.

Bigger SD cards needed too now for Rock Band / Guitar Hero DLC...eventually.

seems that the big N is also deleting pirated WADs... they can be reinstalled tho... this is getting weirder and weirder. i havent been affected, but reports are definitely coming up at an alarming rate.

Not eventually... i've already filled up a 2gig card with GH/RB DLC.

At this rate I dont see a valid reason why I should update to 4.0. The only reason I would update is if Wii Motion Plus requires that I do. For now, I will enjoy my free wiiware and VC games.

Well I finally got that valid reason I was looking for. I rented Wii Music from Blockbuster and guess what. I need to update my system to continue. I decided to bite the bullet and update to the new firmware seeing as Wii Sports Resort is most likely going to require it anyways. Good news though! The games that I did install through the wad manager 1.3 are still functional. Didnt bother me in the least considering I hadnt installed any other games for a few months. I guess I will be legit for now.

Legit too...for now.

that's because wii music only updates you to 3.2 or 3.3 (i forget) it usually just install new IOS's where necessary. madworld's update is only an update to 3 of the IOS's

a workaround has been found to make everything work on 4.0, trucha signing can be re-introduced. the only thing holding me back right now is the fact that there's no brick protection yet.

I just bought a wii should I be updating it. What does the updates give?

If you just bought it and dont feel like modifying it at all then yes, upgrade. The new 4.0 firmware allows you to load Wii channels from SD card and also allows the wii to read SDHC cards.

where do you get the wii channels and how do you go about modding it?

If you accidentally update, you can use a firmware downgrader, so you're not completely out of luck. I block updates on all games now that I copy from work/download... love my free WiiWare & Virtual Console games way too much.
