She's going to foster it until it's big enough to go out on his own. This weekend he was still wobbly on his feet poor thing. She asked me if I wanted him but believe it or not I said no. I thought with the problems I had with my cats and a bunny, I couldn't imagine what they would think of a raccoon.
I may babysit tho. /ubbthreads/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/lol.gif

Put it somewhere else then and let nature be

ummm still noooooo.
If you found a toddler/kitten/dog etc. wondering around in the street would you let it be and let nature take it's place? Maybe it gets hit maybe it doesn't who knows...you have to cull the herd somehow.

People "rescue and release" animals all the time...why is that wrong? Do they die once you release them?

tippi, tell your friend to be careful, mnr can fine you for keeping wildlife. my friend had a whole litter whose mother was hit by a car last year. they were a handful! but cute as can be! the purr and cuddle with their entire bodies. as long as your friend with the barn doesnt have chickens or stuff for the coon to get into - and as long as he can stay through the winter he should be ok. i can give you any information on feeding, teaching, etc if you like. oh, also, if he is that little tell your friend to get the kitten milk formula from the pet shop it wont make him sick like dairy milk can. awwwwwwe, they are so cute.
i hate that saying let nature take its course, nature isnt the trap or vehicle that kills the mother animal, so its not fair to the babies to just let them suffer. good for you and your friend tippi!

Thanks I will let her know. We also have another friend who fostered 3 babies a couple years ago and he was out at camp so we were talking to him to get the ins and outs of taking care of him.
As for the barn there is nothing in it, it's just an empty barn they use to keep donkey's in.
I believe she is calling the Humane Society to see what she should do as well.

the humane society has to tell you what mnr will tell you, just to leave it alone, or bring it to the shelter for euthanization. we have no wildlife sanctuary in the area! pm for you!

When I worked at the HS years ago I fostered raccoons so they didn't euthanized them then. We kept them there at the HS and I took care of them until they were big enough to be released. Mind you this was about 15 years ago.

those mnr rules came into effect a few years ago. they can be very strict now! check out this site when you have a few minutes http://www.aspenvalleywildlifesanctuary.com it is one of the closest ones we have. i think they have something on their site about the mnr rules and a petition against some of them.
