Can someone tell me if it makes a different or is it hard on the air conditioning unit to turn it off and on instead of leaving it run all summer long 24/7?
It's been very cool at night and don't need the a/c running but wondering if turning it off and on is harming it.

No.
It's more efficient to maintain a constant temperature, but if it's running 24/7 I'd think there was something wrong with it.

I only run mine at night, have for the last 2 summers. But mines not big enough to make a diff in the whole house, just keeps my room cool at night.

Truth is I don't really know how to use the freaking thing cause it's new. If I put it on auto I find that it isn't cold enough in here during the day.

It should have some kind of timer you can set on it either by clock or hours or a thermostat setting where you can set it to something like 75º.

/I'm assuming the book was missing when you bought it lol

07-04-2007, 07:40 PM
/ubbthreads/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/lol.gif smart asss I read the book and there is a timer but then is that not the same as turning it off and on?

tippikitty
07-04-2007, 07:42 PM
I guess I'll have to read the book again and set the timer and temperature for each hour. I think I remember reading somewhere in the manual that you can do that.

I just really only wanted to know if it was too hard on the a/c to turn it off and on as appose to running it all the time. My husband thinks it is, I say it's not mostly cause I don't care. /ubbthreads/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/lol.gif

Use it only when you need it..simple

tippikitty

So you don't think it's any harder on it to turn it off and on?

It won't hurt an ac to turn it off. Any ac will turn itself off if it reaches the set temperature.

I don't think so. I turn the one in my office off and on a few times a day.
Hasn't damaged it!

It would probably be more effecient if it was on steady, as opposed to being turned off and back on - but if that doesn't matter to you then do whatever works for you.

The most common mistake people make in running their air conditioners is to open their windows at night. Half the job of an air conditioner is to remove the humidity from the air. Relative humidity increases at night because the temperatures are generally cooler. The air conditioner works all day long to reduce the temperature AND remove the humidity. Opening the windows at night lets all the humidity back in the house and causes the air conditioner to have to work harder the next day to remove it. Therefore, you get less comfort and reduced or no savings.

You should turn it off when you don't use it. Do your small part in saving our energy sources. JMO

the only thing that really hurt it about turning it on and off is turning it off and turning it back on within 3 minutes of turning it off.. some newer ones have relay switches which won't damage the compressor or exhange, but the older ones don't so it may damage them.

It's more energy efficient to maintain a constant temperature in your house unless you were going on vacation or something.
It's better to run a heating or cooling source for a few minutes to keep a constant temperature than it is to run it longer too change it a larger number of degrees.

I've work with furnace and air conditioners and have tested this. I makes a big difference on the amount of hydro I've used.

/*~TippiKitty~* move the bike closer to the air conditioner. /ubbthreads/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/lol.gif

If we could get some half decent warm weather I wouldn't be having this problem. I could just keep it running, but it's so damn cold at night.

We have 2 window air conditioners in our house. One in our bedroom and one in our kitchen I turn them off and on, on quite a regular basis. However, 90% of the time they are running full blast! And I have it done any damage to them yet. I like it that way and so does my husband, the poor baby's toes are generally quite chilly but I think he's used to it like that now too.
hehe just remember if it seems to have stopped blowing cold air as well as it used to... you may want to clean the filters before having a fit on your husband /ubbthreads/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/blush.gif

I think its better just to leave it on. My A/C man says he sets his for 75 and when he gets home from work he knocks it down to 70. We have central A/C and leave it on all the time. The temp around here goes up and down..........
