View Full Version : Scam?

I just had a young brunette knocking on my door, asking for a ride in order to watch a 1 and 2 year old. She appeared to be with a group of friends also. I did not give her a ride since I was too busy, and really questioned if she actually needed help. It seemed very scripted, and to her credit, a very good sob story. Anybody else have this happen?

Also, I think it says a lot about the state of our society if, when a person asks for help we are left questioning the legitimacy of the request because of all of the scams out there. She might have actually needed the help. If so, I feel terrible.. but I honestly have no clue..

Well I doubt anyone would leave a couple of young kids alone because their babysitter was late so I wouldnt feel bad. For all you know they asked for a ride so they would know you arent home.

I wouldn't have given her or her friends a ride even if I wasn't busy. You just don't know, with the people out there, what is really wanted from you. Could have bashed you in the back of the head soon as you let them in the car and then steal everything. They're getting younger and younger, and they are more confident when they have friends watching, or even helping.

Besides, she can use public transportation, her parents or her friend's parents if she needs a ride. She obviously isn't afraid of strangers.

Today my friend got a new truck and she decided to use it to drop off pallets to me for my fire. I have never seen the new truck yet and got didn't see her get out of it and being extreamly paranoid so i grabed a knife before i answered the door and sent my son to the other room. LOL.. I never answer the door unless I am expectring someone. Usually people know to call me and tell me they are here or such or else i won't answer the door.

funny.. I never even thought of the whole getting a ride so they know I'm out of the house idea, or the getting a ride and bashing me in the head.. They would have been disappointed if they did cathe a ride and plan on doing that. There is really not much of anything of value in my van at all.

It's getting pretty bad when someone knocks on your door and asks for a ride to baby sit. Sounds pretty fishy to me.

I assumed she was talking about the Fabbracino fella. He's the only naked fella running around town that I heard of.

Just a co-incidence I'm sure.

You need to be very vigilant in every way even on here. There are people that you feel you can trust and try and help and then they turn around and back stab you or make BS accusations against you.

There are a lot of scams and people who scam and most of the time if you fall for the sob story you can find yourself in a situation that is not very pleasant. My advice is keep to yourself and keep proof of things that are said and done or you will be hung and nailed to the cross without even knowing it. Thank God that when the police see BS however and see who is behind these scams and who the person is that the accusations are being made against they see through the scammer and leave the victims alone.

I was thinking the same thing. I'd have to do something about that if I felt the need to grab a knife everytime someone knocked on my door.

It just doesn't sound right.

Maybe she lived in a neighborhood, not necessarily in this city but maybe Toronto, that has a high crime rate. I'm not that paranoid because I have never had my home broken into. I would much rather be paranoid than be putting myself and my family at risk.

In all the places I've lived in Upstate NY with crazy crime rates, I've never felt the need to bring a knife to the door with me. I would hate to imagine what would happen if they ever got it away from me- I'd be like handing them their weapon of convenience.

And yea Oscar, something sounds off about her story- I would have handled it the same way you did.

If someone showed up at my door and asked for a ride i don't think i would do it either. I would tell them nicely to leave. i think they had some sort of agenda. Seems weird.

Well it certainly DOES matter if there was another case of a naked man running around town that made the news? If there wasn't, then she and I are in fact talking about the same case.

I'd like Giggle to answer this please.

I sleep with bear spray on the nightstand, and at night I will definitely have it with me if someone comes to my door. I am very nervous of people knocking on my door as well. Doesn't even have to be night, anything can happen at any time. All it takes is a minute for someone to push you into your house and then do who knows what?

I guess some of us are bigger 'chickens' than others, but at least we'd be prepared if something did happen.

When I was a kid the house next to us was busted (no warning to neighbours) because they threatened another person on our street to cut into natural gas lines and blow up the neighbourhood and when the cops busted them they (the people they were arresting) fired shots. My parents and my sister were in our house and i noticed the front door wasn't locked and as i ran up to lock the dead bolt and they were running up our front steps. I have been paranoid ever since. I guess it is overkill but I don't trust anyone. My other neighbour across the street slept with a golf club and hammer beside her bed after that. I think i was maybe 9 when it happened.

I've lived in Toronto and Vancouver enough that the front door is ALWAYS locked, unless I'm sitting right outside it having a smoke. The back will be unlocked ONLY if one of us is in the backyard. Day or night. And I live in a quiet neighbourhood, where all neighbours look out for each other.

So are mine. My boyfriend laughs at me and says I am scared of life, but I don't care.
I always lock it.
MY luck somebody would break in while I'm sitting on the toilet attending to business!
(I actually do have an honest fear that IF my house ever catches fire - that is when it will happen.)

A locked door might make you feel safer, but it will only keep an honest thief out. There are ways a thief can break glass quietly and be into a house in seconds through a window.
Investing into a burglar alarm would be your safest bet for deterring thiefs.

I have dogs. They bark if a bird flies over the house, so they will let me know if somebody breaks in.

Mind you, there have been PLENTY of times that they have scared the crap out of me by barking at said bird.

First, I saw a movie once that started like that. Two girls knock on the front door and ask for something. The man says no problem, helps the girls out and shenanigans occur. I'm not going to give away the ending but you can guess what happens next. It's an adult film. So you never know. It could have been a wonderful experience.

Second, The guy that "walked away from Riverview naked?" How is he not crazy? He ran away... naked! I understand not everyone in there is a nut job, but this guy!? Come on! Not to say i am against nudity as you may not from my first point, but roaming the streets with your birthday suit on? That's Crazy!

Finally, the world is changing, be careful. Lock your doors. stay safe, be good and have fun! ;)

wow, and i thought my 15 lb cat was a porker lol, but she thinks she is a dog. we named her psych, because at just a few weeks old, she had my friends doberman backed into a corner. pysch oreo is her name. since she is black and white. I even have DO NOT PET CAT, SHE IS NOT FRIENDLY, posted on my doors, because we have nurses come into the house, and the cat does not like strangers. she growls and tries to bite them if they touch her.

i dont lock my doors during the day, always at night, and always if I am in the tub. TOO MANY HORROR SHOWS WITH SHOWER SCENES IN THEM. lol

A girl came to my neighbour's door the other night and asked for $20. She had a job interview the next day and needed to do laundry, had no money, etc. etc. When my neighbour offered her some clothes, she said no thanks and went away....

I had a young woman at my door a couple weeks ago wanting money. She told me she ran from an abusive foster home in sudbury and needed money to feed her toddler and that she was pregnant. I offered her some food and to come in and I would make some phone calls for her. She refused and went her way. She had no child with her. I felt bad for the longest time and thought about her. she worried me. It was an obvious lie and I did not give her any money but did offer to help.

I was driving down 4th line the other day and there was a crow laying on the side of the road - I assumed it was dead.

When I drove past it, it got up, shook itself off and flew away.

I think I was almost the victim of a crow-jacking. I'll bet if I had stopped to help it, a bunch of hoodlum crows would have flown out of the bush and knocked me on the head and taken my wallet and my car.

I can't believe I almost fell for that.
