I'm not one for solutions in a pill, but forgetting what you want to might be a little easier soon.

I think it's a terrible idea. We are who we are because of the sum total of our experiences, which includes good and bad.
By being able to wipe out bad memories, you'll effectively be changing the person -- bad idea.

I disagree I think it's a good idea. Just think of all the children who suffer abuse and are taken out of the home. Not only could they get a new life but they also could forget the traumatic one the left behind.

It should not be used on children. Only consenting adults and I agree with kdawg

If my child was raped or molested, I would want to erase that memory. But I would need a lot more safety studies done before I was willing to administer any such drug to my child.

ya i would think this drug could be good in only certain circumstances...not a drug I would ever use for heartaches and life learning stuff...things like molestation...child abuse and things that can damage aperson for life...this may be a great drug..

It's a bad idea-for so many reasons.
You can wipe away a memory-and we know this from ppl who suffer from it-and still they obtain an implicit memory.
For a rape victim-How would they like to walk around for the rest of their lives-getting shuddeers and fears being around menb.c their mind knows something happened but their concious mind can make no sense of it-You no longer have a grasp on what's dangerous and what isn't. At least when there are psychological and emotional problems when you remember-you can find the route issue and get help and support. With a pill-they think it will be poof gone-it won't be..they'll just not have the cause to their symptom.
If the pill is to ease pain and hurt i'm all for it-for Them-as I don't like pills either way myself-but to take a whole memory? nope.
I agree with the person who said something about our memories making us who we are.
There are so many people who have held lectures, books, and speeches about what they went through to help and inspire others-how could anyone help anyone if we all just forgt it ever happened? How could society move along if it forgets its past-Should the jews forget the holocaust ever happened? NO. They don't ever want it to happen again. we have memory for a reason.

Isn't part of growing and learning.... making mistakes, and getting hurt, and knowing not to make those same mistakes again.
I was victim of some really bad things as a child, but it molded who I am today. I formed a support group that ran for several years, to support families with children who were victims of child sexual abuse. I developed a full day seminar with judges and speakers to come and explain their role in a system that too often seems to focus on the offender, and revictimize the victim. Sometimes understanding why things work the way they do in a legal system, can empower and give strength to those victims. I am sure if you think about it, tragedy has produced some pretty incredible people who step up, after being victimized, and become "Survivors" of the ordeal. And even more, they are more proufoundly able to help others who experience similar tragedies. I believe in todays society, people dont have time to grieve. They dont learn to cope with stress. As soon as life gets overwhelming and complicated, people turn to medication, legal and illegal including alcohol. So where do coping skills come from, if not from the hurdles we deal with in life. Where does the inner strength to endure come from. How do we give and teach our children coping skills, if we look for answers to numb, og boggle, or block those memories. and where do we draw the line.
i believe in the cliche: what doesnt kill you, makes you stronger.

Cheers to YAH. What if YAH's memory of what happened to him/her as a child were wiped out? He/she would never have formed that support group and been able to help so many others.
That's what we'd end up with this drug -- people feeling honky-dory, but no one able (or trying) to prepare others against perpetrators.

Just because we don't remember something doesn't mean it isn't still a part of us. Thats about my thinking on this.
A solution in a pill.......

Not everyone has a positive outcome from being abused as a child.

I think the media writes up all the things that has been found out about medication. You are not going to find a doctor to use this unless in extreme cases. Believe me there are extreme cases.
What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. We are made up of our experiences, ignoring them in the name of science is a very bad idea. I can't prove that statement, but I feel it's true.

I can and have found lots of numbers on ritalin use in young kids, they are scary at best and in some areas disgusting.... A teacher in the north here had 12 special needs kids in their elementary school class last year. Say this teacher had 36 kids, which they didn't (smaller class sizes and all) that is still 1 in 3 kids that are for lack of a better term disabled in some way at this regular school. I hope you are right Super Gram, but this is a solution in a pill.
BTW I keep saying solution in the most sarcastic of terms.

Too bad it does end up killing some.
