View Full Version : voiding warranty?

I read somewhere that on newer PC's that come with Vista (laptop), that if you restore it to windows XP you're voiding the warranty.
is this true?

Yes this would be true as long as you can't restore it to the manufacturer's OS = Vista in this case at the time of needing warranty. If the HD is failing and you had win XP on it at the time and needed a replacement drive (and you could not restore it to manufacturers specs) and the manufacturer or place you bought it from discovers you had win xp on it then it will void your warranty.
Basically i suggest not doing it, but me, myself and i would not care, an the less they know the better it is for you, but in the case of them discovering it out, your SOL just remember that.
So it is true because the machine is not at the manufacturers specifications in which it was at the time of the sale and production, at the time of warranty that maybe needed.

I would do it too, but being as it's not mine I don't think I'm going to.
Thanks for the info.

Most of the time if the OEM supports both operating systems than they will support you. If you send it into the depot for service and the hard drive needs to be reformatted, you'll get a hard drive with Vista on it. Most of the time they will hardly troubleshoot an XP machine that originally has Vista on it. As for voiding the warranty, adding XP to your machine will not void the warranty. If the RAM fails, its not due to having XP on the machine. If the hard drive fails, its not because of XP.

I looked at several Tech Support sites and they've all mentioned something similar to this;
<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">You'll forfeit the warranty coverage and support of your new HP computer if you
do away with the factory installed Windows Vista operating system and replace it
with Windows XP. Thus, it is not recommended to do so.
</div></div>

As far as I know, at Dell you do not void the warranty if you replace the OS. They may be reffering to the software support that they do provide for free. If your hard drive crashes, its not a direct relation to having XP on the machine. Care to provide a link to that quote?

If you replace the OS and the manufacturer states it is OK to do so in their terms of agreement with the user then most certainly you will be fine, but to my knowledge you have to call the manufacturer or whom ever is covering the warranty of the machine before hand and GET IT IT writing if they state it is ok to do so.
As far as i know and have known for years including from my former business adventurers... you must return the PC or Laptop in the same state (OS AND ALL Restore) it was delivered to you, before warranty is provided .. if not then you will/can void your warranty unless otherwise stated by the terms of agreement by the warranty.

LOL yeah ok there Maxy. Not with the major Tier 1 like IBM, HP, Toshiba, Lenovo. You can put whatever OS you want on them, how do you think Corporate customers deploy images without breaking the warrant?

The best bet is to read the individual manufacturers terms for the warranty.

I work for MicroAge and we are a authorized service dealer for HP, Compaq, Toshiba, and IBM. If your Hard Drive, Mother Board, Wireless Card, RAM or whatever hardware component fail’s your software has nothing to do with it. XP, Vista or Linux, a hardware failure is a hard ware failure. There are other ways to test if something has failed. There are bootable Linux OS's out there that help with trouble shooting. So to sum it up, if you want to install windows xp go right ahead. The only thing i will caution you on is that if you want to call toll free tech support they will not be able to help you because all they do is read a screen, they have no technical back ground, so if it is not the original software they can't help, not because they don't want to, its because they can't.
Hope this helps.

Mikey,
Cool dude.
We have used you guys up there a few times for some of our projects, like a project I designed just over a year ago installing firewalls at all the LCBO stores.
Not sure how much we used you guys for the Tim Horton's or Wendy's projects.

Well i was only following your class which is none as everytime you have to come on in usually when i post something and have to talk about something the topic starter never even asked about, damn IT people all they can talk about is things that are outdated or things that are not relevant to the situtation.
Ya it is not worth it for me to get arrested for hitting a so called proclaimed IT PRO as it is below my class to hit someone with no knowledge.

I know for sure we did some work for the LCBO, but i don't think we had any Tim Horton's or Wendy's. But it would be great if you sent us the work. Always look forward to a new challenge
tired-n-cranky

Tim's and Wendys were prior to LCBO, and there weren't a lof of those. LCBO on the other hand, we had a lot of those.
That was probably the biggest network I have ever had to create, connecting 800 LCBO stores together.
