In my opinion, there is no overall " best " guitar player, bassist or drummer in the world.

You could group them as best rock, country, metal, jazz etc., and do it that way.

Just because you can play 10 notes a second at 140 decibels does not make you the best guitar player in the world and playing an entire symphony on an eight string bass does not make you the best bassist in the world.

But that's just my opinion.

I guess what I was trying to say was that because there are so many different styles of music, you can't just pick one person and call them the best guitar player, bassist or drummer in the world.

Not all of rock guitarist play just rock. My favourite is John Petrucci, he is more than just a rock guitarist. He is into everything mix of guitar playing there is.

The creator of the "Brown Sound" Eddie Van Halen for guitar hands down.....1978 Eruption changed the way guitar was played forever. Then when ppl thought that all there was then he did Cathedral (the volume swell guitar solo) and the intro to Mean Street (where he does a kind of a bass slap thing). All the great guitarists today are here because they tried being like him. Nuno Bettencourt, Zakk Wylde, Dime, Paul Gilbert et al
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUrwa3TMSwE sound quality is a bit low

I can't pick a best guitarist but I do have a lot of favorites.

Robert Johnson - King of delta blues
Ry Cooder - Great slide guitar player
Eric Clapton - Every time I hear his stuff I'm reminded of why I love to play.
Stevie Ray Vaughan - One of a kind, pure emotion.
BB King - His old live stuff is some of the best blues around
John Mayer - Keeping the blues alive.

Can you tell I love blues?? Here are a few cool liver performances

Guitar would probably not be where its at today without some of these old guys.
