Not really surprised. The last time I priced a ticket to Toronto return was something like $275.
It cost me just over $200 to rent a car and make the trip.

Maybe this will just add fuel to the push for passenger rail service... faster & more comfortable anyway.

Greyhound is pulling out the cheap stops. If by Northerwestern Ontario they mean Thunderbay -> Sault Ste. Marie. That is cutting Canada almost in half! No more East -> West Coast travels or visa versa.

sure they will. they just won't stop to pick people up.

i can guess why they have no passengers. 7 years ago it cost $34 to go from here to elliot lake. last time i caught the greyhound it was well over twice that. if you want to price-gauge people and then give them crappy service where they have to deal with rude people your buisness is going to suffer. personally i think their policies suck and will never use them again anyways, after being told it wasn't their problem if no one would move seats to let my then two year old sit with me and just sit him anywhere there is an empty seat. they need to use their heads a bit.

What do you think gas was at 7 years ago? I cant quite remember but I think it was somewhere around the low 70's. Fuel is not the only thing that went up in price. As minimum wage goes up drivers and mechanics have to be paid more, insurance to pay, Safety inspections every 6 months. Not to mention the very steep price of parts on something big like a bus. An example is the cost of a tire, for the price of 1 tire on that bus you could buy 4 premium tires for your vehicle. There are alot of factors to put into play about fare increases. I'ved travelled greyhound more times than I can remember and have always been greeted with nothing but respect and always professional.

i know prices go up but unless all those things have also more than doubled there is no excuse for it. the drivers are always nice with the exception of one grumpy old man that does between here and sudbury and the rude lady that works the cash there. it's nice you haven't had to deal with crap from them but i know i'm not the only on who has.

Yes, for sure and we could also use a few less diesel spewing buses on the road!

It will make more room for those fast transports.

Thought so. There is a lot of traffic FROM the Sault. Not much between Sault and Thunder bay. It only makes business sense to shut it down.

Good thing for Darryl Buck though, it's bought time he bought a bus! To do a Lakeshore run.

However, Transport Minister John Baird thinks the company is simply a bully tactic aimed at trying to shake down the government for subsidies.
Their actions are heavy-handed and clearly an attempt to bully the provinces of Manitoba and Ontario.
exactly. they are still making profit. someones getting greedy and sees a way to get the gov to flip the bill for them. they see a handout and they want in on it.

you were right t-pot (: but does this mean that people won't be able to get across the country? so the west will be cut off from the east? if so the government should just shut down ALL greyhounds, give the funding that greyhound wanted to start a new bus company that is CANADIAN

This sucks. Having lived in one of the small towns between here and T Bay, and one between here and Sudbury, I know there are lots of people who depend on the short hops to get here, T Bay, or Sudbury to regular medical appointments with specialists. Some have cars but don't want the winter drive, some don't have cars guaranteed to make the trip. When we lived out west, and were here visiting, we took the bus down to Toronto to fly out west, since airfare here is held hostage by Air Canada. Last time my daughter and I had to fly to Toronto for a medical appointment, in 2005, it cost us almost $1300 return Air Canada. Hell of a lot more expensive than the bus, whatever it was.

Don't know why they're really doing it, but it sure is crummy.

Can people ever have a thread that stays on topic?

If you want to talk about love of meat, DQ, just start a thread about it! I personally, am not interested in your personal life. Every thread seems to get destroyed by stupidity! Please do not tell me to not read the thread if I don't like it. I, sometimes, hate having to read through all the crap to get to what the thread is supposed to be about.

Back to the topic, many people use the service to get out west. The buses seem to always be full. Not only are the buses full, they are pulling a trailer full of parcels and mail. This is a case of bullying. Everyone is wanting a government handout. I agree with Bluekrissyspikes about the CANADIAN bus service.

Its already happened down south. I had to drop of a car in Brockville Ont pop 22,000 and the plan was to take a bus back to the Sault. Even the taxi driver did not know where the Grey hound bus station was.

Turns out you had to prearrange, a pickup apointment with Grey Hound and they would pick you up at a corner store. LOL I found out latter everyone just uses a go train.

Yep and Enterprise plus because I rented a car I took my brother with me and had room for two more people for less than the price for one to go greyhound.

If they have to get from Sault Ste. Marie to Winnipeg, then what is the problem picking up the people along the way. It is not like they are spending a lot on the Greyhound Stops. Have you seen the buildings? Now they are going to travel to Sault Ste. Marie and that is it. How are the people to get to Wawa? White River? Thunder Bay? I guess people between Sault Ste. Marie and the Sask/Man border are out of luck. This is dividing Canada up. Next thing the Greyhound will only be operating in Southern Ontario and east.

People in smaller communities are becoming more and more isolated.

Igor

From what I understand, the people in the remote and Northern Communities need transportation, too! It is not going to be a nice situation for a lot of people who depend on the buses. This is just the beginning!
