What version of Wii system software do you have? And what size is the SD card?

If the system software is 4.0, you can't read a card over 2GB.

And, if you mean it's blank in the PC, format it and re-add the files.

Could very well be a file or folder out of place. Just set it up again, only takes 1-2 minutes to do it.

Never heard of that one. The popular chip now is of course the WiiKey2, but I've never come across a game that doesn't work on the WiiKey v1 after updating it, back when Super Smash Bros. came out.

$20 cheaper as well..

I have read up on that drive key and I am seriously thinking of getting it. The install looks super easy and even if it plays just one back up, it has paid for itself. Looking online, its 49 bucks plus shipping.

From what I gather from the video, you are supposed to load your game directly from SD card. How is that possible when most games take 4 GB of space or more depending on the game? Correct me if I am wrong but I believe the Wii can only recognize an SD card that is 2 GB or smaller. If that is true, than you would need a couple of SD cards to play the game, thus ruining the experience.

With firmware 4.0 it can support 4GB, 8GB, and I think even 16GB or higher. I believe you can upgrade the firmware AFTER you've installed Homebrew, but I don't want to take the chance. I like my freebie Virtual Console and WiiWare games.

Thanks for clearing that up. A Google search revealed that the Wii will recognize a maximum 32GB SDHC card. Not too shabby. I am holding off until the end of the month to get the Drivekey. General, if you get it, be sure to post your review. I am skeptical of buying these things because I am afraid it wont work.

Pretty much every chip will work, but the ones that actually get supported updates will be the primary concern. WiiKey2 and D2CKey still support their chips, as does the group behind the Wasabi chip. Not sure about others..

My biggest concern is if the Drivekey will work with any version of Wii firmware. From what I gather, the Drivekey intercepts data from the DVD drive and fools the motherboard into thinking that your backed up game is really a retail version of the game. I am pretty sure that has no bearing on the version of Wii firmware unless Nintendo comes up with something in the near future.

I am telling you you should wait. Who do you think makes the Drivekey? It is Wiikey... this is the next step. Wiikey Fusion is the Wiikey combined with the Drivekey, and new added features.

I am getting my Drivekey at the end of the month. If Wiikey comes out with the Fusion before the end of the month and it doesnt require a hack of any kind, than maybe I will get it.

I could be wrong, but I've always here a soldered chip is more reliable than any other in the end. Either way, free games are great. :) Just created my disc for Metroid Prime/Metroid Prime 2 the other day. Didn't want to waste a dual layer disc so I used an image of just the first two games, as I already have a disc for Metroid Prime 3 somewhere in my collection.

I figured out what I need to upgrade to 4.1 on my Wii now, while still keeping the Homebrew Channel and the ability to install WADs. That makes me happy since I like the support of larger SD cards, considering I have 2 unused 8GB cards sitting here.

Oh yeah? Mine is on verison 3.4u, was afraid to go any higher because I love my homebrew channel, and the usb loaders for my backups.

Sweet! I am curious to see how this chip stacks up against the competition. Can I ask a small favor? Check various backups, both new and old games to see if the new ones work. I am sure that if Wii Sports Resort works with this chip, than pretty much any game will work.

Try these:

Wii Sports Resort
Super Smash Bros. Brawl (DVD9)
Mad World

If you can run all 3 of them, you're good for the time being.

Assuming that its DVD9, yes you would need a dual layer disc

B.David
09-16-2009, 10:32 AM
Yes, it's a dual layer, that's what DVD9 is. SSB Brawl and the recently released Metroid Prime Trilogy are both DVD9. There is a DVD5 version of Prime though that takes out MP3, since it's available on a DVD5 itself.
