View Full Version : Number 7 Blast furnace went KABOOOM!

I'm surprised no-one has posted this yet. Number 7 blast furnace at ESSAR suffered a major explosion last night just after 2:30. Big time damage, but thankfully there were NO injuries.

Apparently its a fairly large mess.
The men on shift were all able to run to safety, thankfully there were no injuries at all.

Number 6 blastfurnace, which hasn't been operational maybe the only option for the plant while repairs are being made.

I didn't hear about any of this. No wonder it has been so quiet. I wonder what happened? I know it needed repairs and there was talk about it going down... six will be fired up.

My son was working in another part of the plant nearby and saw the explosion. Said it was pretty bad.

Wow, I must have been tired. I didn't hear a thing and no.7 is right at the end of my street! Usually keeps me up all night when they blow off steam...

Anyone know the cause or where in the furnace?

My husband is working nights this week and he said he seen a couple of Ambulances there. Glad no one was hurt.

My boyfriends dad works there he said it was some type of tubing that provides heat to the furnace (he explained it to me in more detail but I cant recall exactly what he said) he said it was pretty bad too. He was pretty shaken by it. Like everyone else said, just glad he made it out alright!

"Operations at the Slabcaster and DSPC are temporarily suspended. Production at the plate and strip mills and all finishing units (cold mill, QBI, welded shapes) is not affected at this time."

This is definitley a positive slant on what appears to be serious damage. They haven't even been able to get the last of the iron out but will have to shortly or things will get much worse.

If the preliminary findings stand, there will be temporary layoffs.

Number 6 blast furnace may be ready in 3 weeks which was initially slated to start October 28th.

I hope this doesn't affect to many of the younger employees as they just returned from layoff not long ago.

My husband is on nights this week too and said it was just luck that no one got hurt. IF it had happened during the day it would have been a disaster.

Days or nights doesn't make much of a difference as there are only a handful of workers there at anytime. Main thing is that nobody was hurt.

I hope no one gets layed off. Thank goodness I'm in a depratment that is still running.

with the loss of #7, we now dont have the ability to produce liquid steel, coils at cold mill and slabs will only last for so long...maybe 2-3 weeks, what about customers that are now not going to get their steel, will they stay with use through this............probably.I think they drained the hearth today so thats a good sign.Hopefully we will have liquids iron before mid october.

They are still trying to tap the furnace. The last I heard they will be down 6-8 weeks on 7 and hopefully will have six up in three weeks.

I was coming down the hill today and saw tons of fire going on over at the plant, so I went for a drive to look.

I'm not 100% sure but it appeared to be coming from the coke ovens....flames coming out of the tops of the batteries and out a couple of stacks above them....quite the show. The flame coming out of the tall stack (the one that usually has one burning) was also very large...

Anyone know what this was about?
