Microsoft is banking on Windows 7 to breathe new life into a PC world where most computer users are running XP -- an operating system that was released in the early days of the Bush administration.
Experts expect that PC users will change their operating system for the first time in about eight years when Microsoft (MSFT (http://money.cnn.com/quote/quote.html?symb=MSFT&source=story_quote_link), Fortune 500 (http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/fortune500/2009/snapshots/3063.html?source=story_f500_link)) launches Windows 7 on Oct. 22.

Maybe I bite the bullet and install it tonight.

Ive been running it since the alpha stages back in dec of last year. Also have had a directx11 machine running for a few now. Hopefully the the brain dead masses will adopt this and not fall for the " this operating system is crap because my hardware from 1994 isnt compatible with it"

Hmm... I dunno Hans, that's quite an upgrade from DOS 6.0 ;)

Man, shows how much I follow this ...

I thought Windows 7 has been live for a while. I've had a "Final Build" for a few months now and like the other guy I've been using a build of Windows 7 for about 6 - 8 months.

It's Vista ... a little more streamlined.

I call it "Mojave" :p

Let's see all the gullable PC users in the world start screaming ...

"Oh, it's so much better than Vista!!"

They fixed the disk transfer speed issue and it runs great on little system resources. Good enough for me lol. I also had zero issues with vista either.

I actually bought an upgrade copy of ultimate back in july when they had the preorder special. should be shipped in a few days. I figured M$ got something right they deserve a few bucks for it.

Cant wait for Dirt 2 to see DX11 in action.

Ok, they did fix the memory leaking in the sidebar ... yay MS developers! :p

MS fixes things that should already be "fixed" and should never be an issue in the first place. (most of the time: memory leaks, resource allocation, infinite loops etc)

I wouldn't give MS a dime. ;)

Edit: Although if I wasn't able to get it for free I might end up purchasing.

100 bucks for a copy of ultimate wasnt too shabby I thought and im just using the license off my gateway to upgrade from to 7, as the wife outright refuses to adopt 7 and leave vista. As for the 349.99 they are selling it for now is a kick in the teeth. I never did use the sidebar option lol.

I am going to try out the professional version first. I don't see the need to deploy ultimate as I do not need 35 languages and bit locker.

Havent noticed a difference between either of them myself.Desktop is running 7 ultimate, the netbooks are running pro and ive yet to see a difference yet.

I have a legit copy of XP which is an upgrade. Can I get an upgrade copy of 7 and do a fresh install from that disc?

are you asking if you can use an upgrade version to do a full install?

the answer is simple. no, its an upgrade copy

Yes Vista was very good to me. Have been using 7 for quite awhile now and its better. I don't think they fixed the disk transfer speed completely but it's somewhat acceptable now.

DirectX 11 will be nice, I was enjoying Dx10 for 2 years now...shame to those who stayed on XP...if your were a gamer....

Yes, I noticed file transfers are still not as spiffy as under XP. The rest seems to be on par or better than xp, and I dig the windows media sidebar application. Wish it would support Flac files, but I guess you can't have everything.

Huh..... I wonder why you are able to simply do a full install off of an XP upgrade disc. You only had to add the serial for your Windows 98 cd. Many people of coarse didn't know this and went to the trouble of first installing 98 clean, then followed by XP.

Anybody know how to put the "show desktop" icon on the taskbar on the left instead of the right? I am used to it being on the left...

Ok - so I've got a question for all you gurus: Which is the best version of Windows 7 for me to get? I'm building a new PC as it turns out and I'm going to need an O/S for it. I'll be doing a little gaming, every day MSN, etc. plus using it for an HTPC. What are everyones' thoughts on what Win 7?

Also, if anyone's got suggestions as to a remote control and receiver I'm all ears! :)

Win 7 pro seems to be perfect. i have ultimate installed on my desktop and my laptop. But i have pro installed on my 3 netbooks and ive noticed zero difference for what i do between ultimate and pro except install size. And if you get yourself an ati tv tuner , newer ones anyways come with recievers and remotes usually. And almost all newer tuners have very little configuration requirements and simple to do. And with your new system you shouldnt have any problems with a dual tuner with input recording high def while watching or recording off the other input in hi def.

MS fanbois ... that's funny.

Seriously? You guys took the time to throw a MS party?

May I ask why on earth you would do that? (just for a free "LEGIT" (haha) copy?)

So I guess you guys don't download music, movies etc.

Why not have an MS party? Any excuse is a good one, no? Especially when there's free legit operating systems being offered to host. No need to get all cocky and insulting just because some people don't want to be just like you.

I was going to install that one but opted for the Pro instead. I might install it as a backup OS for when my Win7 breaks, so I can recover my stuff without having to resort to a boot disc.

If you have an older machine that has xp i woudlnt advise on jumping to win 7 without a healthy upgrade first.

What is Domain Join in the Pro version of Win7? How is it different from Remote Desktop in lower versions of Vista or XP? I can connect to my network at work through remote desktop now.

Thanks.
