If any of you are squeamish, don't watch this. It happened last weekend at the Calgary Stampede and has prompted outrage by many over what they claim to be an inhumane sport.

Its a tragedy - poor horsies didn't have a chance, but I don't believe they should stop the Stampede. That Stampede has been going on for ever and ever, if it wasn't for the horse racing, bullriding and so on the Stampede wouldn't exist.
Accidents happen all the time & its a tragedy. No worse than bullriding and tying off that poor bulls balls for sport. Thats kinda sick too,but well, its mostly men that drive these kinds of sports.

Racing if for freaking cars. Some people are just stupid!
If you need to get on an animal and run around a dirt road then your an idiot.
I also love it when the bulls turn and kick the shat out of the dumb assess that are tormenting them. I think that's the best!

I don't like rodeos at all. Getting on an animal and repeatedly jabbing it with huge spurs as you kick it over and over to make it buck....nice.

Chuckwagon racing may keep people going to the stampede, but it is terrible to put the horses at risk in such a dangerous sport.

I lived in Edmonton for 12 years, horse racing, rodeos are part of life in Alberta. They take it seriously - which we can't understand because, well...we don't. /ubbthreads/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
But their horses & bulls are their livelihood - they wait, train all year for this one event. Its tragic that an animal is used in a sport, no different than horse racing all over Canada & the States. Of course, nothing tragic has happened yet, but PETA is all over this just short of showing up nude and inciting evil spells on Cowboys - the Stampede went on.
I've been to a few rodeos myself, never seen an accident - been to the horse races and never witnessed an accident. In fact it was pretty cool, I never betted on any horses, but horse racing is HUGE out west - people bet thousands on these poor horsies.

They take it very seriously. It is their way of life..not ours.

Besides, their livestock is very well taken care of. As Sage stated, it is their lively hood. Those horse go without nothing. They have the best veterinary care, etc. Anyone who knows race horses know that they live to race. Taking that away from them can be cruel as well.

As for bull riding. Those bulls that are selected for the arena actually have it real good. They don't get injured, and they most certainly live longer then their other brethren who may end up as your next hamburger in the near future. Afterwards, they get to stud if successful. A good riding bull is a very valuable thing.

You know all this talk is nonsense if you are a farmer lol. I wonder what they must be thinking if and when they read this thread.

If more people would practice self-restraint as you Chevy, Soonet would be a much happier place to visit. /ubbthreads/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool_shades.gif

I disagree with your race horse statement. Yes, thoroughbreds love to run. In the wild, they would run from predators, run just because they feel good, etc.

BUT, they would not be forced to pound around a race track as a two year old on fragile growing bones and ligaments. That is why there are so many race horses who end up in auction, or worse. Many of them break down at a young age due to overuse. Check out the number of ex-racehorse rescue sites on the net.

This is true intangible to a point. However, should we stop people racing them? What then? Going back to the wild is not a good option for bred in captivity horses. So what are your solutions then?

How about horses that go lame on the farm? Some people still have working horses. Should they stop using them completely? If so, then why own them in the first place. You would quickly get a domino effect of unwanted horses. See where this logic is leading?

I know a few people who breed race horses and love them dearly. They would not wish anything to happen to them. It does happen..but so can a horse break its leg easily in the field to a ground hog hole..and this happens all too often then you could imagine.

Should people stop racing them?
Realistically that won't happen, but I do think that the big money races should not be for 2 and 3 year olds. Racing them so hard, so young is the biggest problem.

Working farm horses rarely go lame if properly managed. The numbers of lame race horses compared to properly managed work horses would be vastly different.

The domino effect of unwanted horses is a real problem. Horse slaughter facilities are up and running for sure. However, much of the influx is due to the racing industry. To many people, horses are disposable commodities that can be tossed out when they are not profitable anymore.

I too know some horse breeders, and yes many do treat them very well and don't follow this pattern, BUT, ask any of them if it happens out there, and how common it is. It is undeniable. The very nature of such a huge money making industry perpetuates this viscous cycle.

actually, cowboys treat their animals better than family...its their livelihood. bronc ridin, for example, horses are trained & rewarded for higher bucking....they are not prodded or spurred!

btw...criminal charges are against one of the drivers over this issue.
