View Full Version : Republicans are So Racist

One of the enduring mysteries of the 2008 campaign was what got Ted Kennedy so mad at Bill Clinton. The former president's entreaties, at some point, backfired, and the explanation has never quite emerged.
I've finally gotten my hands on a copy of Game Change, in which John Heliemann and Mark Halperin report:
As Hillary bungled Caroline, Bill’s handling of Ted was even worse. The day after Iowa, he phoned Kennedy and pressed for an endorsement, making the case for his wife. But Bill then went on, belittling Obama in a manner that deeply offended Kennedy. Recounting the conversation later to a friend, Teddy fumed that Clinton had said, "A few years ago, this guy would have been getting us coffee"
http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0110/Teddys_anger.html
Hillary Clinton was initially pleased when her New Hampshire campaign chairman, Billy Shaheen, mentioned Obama's previous use of drugs: (Page 161):
"Hillary's reaction to Shaheen's remarks was, "Good for him!" Followed by "Let's push it out." Her aides violently disagreed, seeing what Shaheen had said as a PR disaster. Grudgingly, Clinton acquiesced to disowning Shaheen's comments. But she wasn't going to cut him loose. Why should Billy have to fall on his sword for invoking something that had been fair game in every recent election?"

How's that racist? "A few years ago, this guy would have been getting us coffee". I just don't see it. I see it as, a few years ago (Ok more than a few) Clinton was president and Obama wasn't. Obama would have been getting him coffee, just like anyone else in Obamas position.

I like Rush Limbaugh. I don't take him for anything more than entertainment. Truthfully, it does not matter to me who said it. I don't think it was intended as a racial slur. If many were not on political correctness guard 24/7, they would see it as Obama was a political grunt compared to the president a few years ago, and would be serving him coffee. If it were a down right racial slur, like "A few years ago this guy would've been eating fried chicken and watermelon", then I can see for an argument.

lots of justifying statements here..... You people are refusing to acknowledge clear racial slurs. This was one... It was a comment that based off of the color of his skin, that a few years ago he would not be where he is now. It also speaks volumes about many American People, that this statement has some truth to it... I suppose, depending on how he meant the comment, it could actually be a slight of racism, or a slight identifying the racism of the American population....

Democrats are even more racist then the repulicans;

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's 2008 description of then-presidential candidate Barack Obama as a "light-skinned" African American "with no Negro dialect unless he wanted to have one" has put the key Obama ally from Nevada on the defensive amid Republican calls for him to resign.
This guy should be forced to resign!

Belittling isn't racist. Last time I checked. If I were to say, DQ You should be doing my laundry. Would that belittling or attacking you because of your sexual preference? Saying that someone would have been serving coffee to us a few years ago, does not constitute as racist. I'm sorry.

In the context that it was used it was racist. Clinton only said that cause Obama was black and that is why he would have been serving coffee to them years ago. It is not belittling it is a reference to the fact that black people were oppressed and used as slaves and a black slave would have served coffee. That is I am sure what Clinton meant.

Wow, people are way too sensitive.
People, it's not racist ... I said the same thing the other day about a white man. All it means is "he's not qualified" and a very short time ago he was "far down the ladder".
Some people ... lmao. Too much.
"Getting coffee" as in "secretary" as in "just starting out and not much responsibility". In other words, a few years ago he wasn't doing much and now he's the President of the United States according to Clinton .. that's it.
My God though, I still can't believe some people think this way.
Racist remark ... lol. Umm, no.

Implications are what keeps racism alive. Should I be afraid to say I dislike black socks? In fear of someone reading between the lines? I'm not denying the Clinton may have said some racist things, but what I can say from the facts is that comment is not racist.

Thank goodness someone in this thread has some sense.
There's no proof that the comment was racist at all.
"A few years ago, this guy would have been getting us coffee": This is not a racist comment, it's a comment that's quite true. I have a friend who worked in Ontario Legislative Building (Queen's Park), as a journalist, and every politician there has aides who do exactly that; run and get coffee, a chocolate bar, the newspaper, a glass of water, whatever they want.
Political aides are glorified pages in Queen's Park; they actually do get coffee for people.
The coffee comment above could have easily referred to Obama being an unknown up and comer just a few years before 2008.
There's no proof of racial context. Stop making it up and crying about it. Friggin' bleeding heart liberals, you guys are pathetic.

But, you are right, it is really impossible to tell if the comment was made with racist intentions or not. It could be taken either way.

How much attention would he have got he were to say that about Bush? or Gore? or any other white politician? I personally believe some people are too sensitive. Reminds me of that cereal commercial. A man and wife are eating at the table, and he says something along the lines of "Hrmm (brand of cereal), eating healthy?" and she replies "Are you trying to tell me I need to eat healthy?". Of course I paraphrased, and I'm sure most of you have since this. People in defense mode tend to read into things a lot more. It's all about the approach too. I'll give you two more examples and you guys can read into as much as you want. Pretend the conversations went these two ways.
a. Obama is a bad president, he's messing everything up, A few years ago he'd be getting us coffee!
b. Obama is doing a good job, he's battling through a real mess pretty good, and just think, a few years ago he'd be getting us coffee!
We have no idea what was said in the rest of the conversation, so we have no idea how the tone was. Just by taking it by face value, I feel it isn't racist.

Not at all. Keep in mind, this is purely subjective, and simply from my perspective, and this is why Politicians simply need to be careful about what they say, in case some overly sensitive person (like myself admittedly) takes it the wrong way. In retrospect, I can see how it can be meant in a non-racist way, I suppose my initial reaction was based off of how people of this day and age still made a huge deal about a black president. I simply attributed these attitudes to what was said about him getting them coffee.
I'm sure, an error in my judgment.
