There is no such thing as a 3meg service anymore. All DSL service in Ontario was upgraded to 5meg (or therabouts, depending on line quality, distance, etc).

That would be why you are seeing higher than 3meg speeds.

Why would you pay the high prices for Sympatico though? There is tons of DSL resellers that are way cheaper.

I had Bell DSL and was getting about 4.5 MBps on their 5 MB service. Now with Shaw, I get about 9.6-9.8 on their extreme. Not bad if I say so myself.

i cant stand shaw... 2 friends of mine have it..and it isnt consistent...up & down ...sometimes dead.. took one of them 30mins to upload me a 2minute song...

as for the speed package, im not sure about what i am on...but its decent. cant complain about something that has little or no monthly / anual fees

I have yet to have problems with my Shaw. I had it when I moved downtown and it sucked. I got Bell DSL and it was okay.....4.7 MBps on a 5 MB line. Bell dropped a few times and their home networking modem sucks [censored]. When I canceled Bell and got Shaw Extreme, I get roughly 9.7 MBps constant and have yet to have it disconnect.

Strife

Well when I first got Shaw in the downtown district, I was only getting 700k. That was with the old blue Teryon (sp?) modem. I got Bell's 5 MB connection and I was getting about 4500k. Now with Shaw Extreme, I consistently get between 9500-9800k with the newer Motorola modem

09-01-2007, 01:51 AM
Steve if your going to lie, atleast be consitent.

There is a delay with sat, but it isn't 30 seconds. The satellite internet systems currently available run about a half second delay because of the distances involved. To an average web surfer this means about one half a second MINIMUM, between the time you click a link and the time you start to see a change take place. On a practical level it's probably closer to 3/4 of a second response time (750ms). Unfortunately, if you're heavy into internet multiplayer gaming, then we're pretty much done here. You can go elsewhere because a 750ms plus response time is unplayable. Why?

Imagine you are driving a racecar. Now imagine it's about three-quarters of a second delay (750ms) between the time you try to steer left, and the time the racecar starts to respond (750ms). You see the problem. It's like driving on ice and is simply not useable for many internet games that require fast reflexes. Some flight games may be useable, because they don't need as fast a response. However, popular first person shooters like Quake III and Tribes 2 and Counter-Strike are almost unplayable.
If, on the other hand, you're not as big into gaming and are in an area not serviced by DSL or cable then Internet via Satellite may be just the thing for you.

DSL is shared too, so before you start this bandwagon... just the point at which it is shared changes... the dsl is shared at the DSLAM... Cable starts at the line... but its all shared... You would not have internet if it was not shared... You can have slow down's on dsl too, it all depends on how well each system is managed, that is what it comes down to.

Hans

But I wonder if you can actually reach that speed on a average browsing session?
As it stands now, servers often throttle connections, and were not even talking about 100 Mbps or up. It will require ISP's to provide retarded amounts of bandwidth in order to provide thousands of customers a 100/10 Mbps connection...

lol.....highly doubt it. Shaw will always rock Bell in this town with their speed, reliability and their customer service that actually speak English as a first language. With the speeds that I am getting on my Shaw, both on tests and on downloads, Bell can keep their 7 MB connection that noone can ever get 7 MB on

Maryms
12-31-2007, 12:30 PM
Shaw sucks many ppl getting 800KB downloads only.

Strife
12-31-2007, 12:33 PM
show me proof. Wherever I was on Shaw, I always got over 3 MB download, even when the lines on the poles were cracked and the service was intermittent (It was also intermittent on Bell aswell). Those people that are getting 800kb downloads either have old lines in their house or are on the outskirts of town and can barely get it.

I don't think anyone on Shaw Extreme actually expects those speeds to continue for very long. Once shaw has everything settled those speeds will slow down to 9MB or less once more people jump on.
I'll stay with my dsl company for almost half the price.

Having had 3 ISP's over the last 10 years I will say that Shaw tech support is better than Bell(haven't tried the 3rd yet), and the customer service is when it suits them(Shaw, no problems with the other 2).

Bang for the buck though...I can download a 700MB movie in 20 minutes or a 300MB TV episode in 10 minutes for $29.95 with my new DSL company. I'm more than happy with that. /ubbthreads/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Shaw-Bell-Shaw is my history. I like the Bell speeds, but the technology has problems with my telephone line.
As for Shaw, no technology problem, and the 10 Mbit/sec is usually available. I do say usually, as it tends to "slow down" to half that sometimes during peak hours. But even then it's just as fast as Bell DSL was.
I was even going to stick with DSL, but the fact that I could not receive the 7 Mbit profile was the final drop for me.

Andre

I'm not discussing bell in any of my post.
In fact my post to date have been anti-bell....
DSL though is stiill alive.
and if any of you shaw fan boys think you're are going to get those amazon speeds from shaw much longer, than you are mistaken.
They will be capped at 10. Much like you are paying for and they they will go down. It will all come this year.

Hans
12-31-2007, 03:38 PM
10 Mbit/sec is still more then enough for the average person. I often don't see a difference between 5 and 10 Mbit/sec.

Maryms

I'm paying for 5MB service at $29.95.
That's all I want.
I Don't want 10MB service at Shaw $59.9s/month
Shaw's service is going to slow down.

Lately I have been getting speeds close to 20 Mbit/sec, from various test sites located all around the world.
However, I am supposed to get 10 Mbit/sec. I will be happy for as long as it lasts, but I will not be disapointed if it drops down to 10 Mbit/sec...

I think things will stay good for some time to come on Shaw. It's clear they have enough bandwith to supply this city. And I highly doubt many people are going to pay the 100$/month for their Nitro speed in this city. So all that bandwith to supply Nitro to this city, is going to be used mainly by the other services.
But if you are happy with your current service, then that's a good thing.

523 download
470 upload
39 ping
Now I'm not quite sure what this means, but the numbers seem low to me. I have high speed, not lite.
