I think I read here a while back that there's a relatively new restaurant that serves Thai food. Is that true? Was it Five? If so, was it good?

Going out for dinner tomorrow, and DH would like something other than Italian...can you tell he's not from here? /ubbthreads/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

what's the difference between Chinese and Thai ...isn't it all the same... rice and insects ?

That's why most Chinese restaurants give their meals a shot of RAID ..just to make sure nothing moves on the plate

Thai food is generally more spicy, and is less likely to contain meat from domestic animls!

LOL Thai and Chinese food are as different as French is from Italian.

And Five is good, and not THAT expensive. Well I guess it is compared to some of the rubbish restaurants in town.

Thanks for the input. We've been eating at Gliss, Giovanni's, Barsanti's (Root River), Amici's, and Lonestar. We're quite comfortable paying $20 -$25 for an entree...is it very expensive compared to that? We're not food snobs, but we don't go out often, so we like good meals when we do go out. And DH is on Italian food overload, not having grown up here. (Well, except for Gliss' mozzarella bruschetta...I think he could eat that daily... /ubbthreads/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/lol.gif )

My fiance and I went to Five and found it quite expensive. We are quite accustomed to fine dining and have no problem paying $25.00 for an entree, however, for the portion sizes we found it pretty pricey (especially the $20.00 appetizer sampler). On the other hand, the food was excellent and the service was amazing.

And you think you're favourite greasy spoon is any better? My husband's job requires him to do work in many of the restaurant kitchens around town. He could tell you stories about some that would curl your toes and give you second thoughts about spending $20 on an entre. Dirty restaurants have NOTHING to do with the type of food served and EVERYTHING to do with who runs them! You need to get out more.

Actually, if we get to spend $300 a YEAR on entertainment, we're lucky. In the 13 years we've been together, about 12 of those years we couldn't even really afford an evening out at Subway. We're making up for lost time. /ubbthreads/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Bali is a great restaurant for Thai food!! Queen St beside Party Palace. Real, authentic fabulous dishes. I believe many of the recipes are family recipes.

They have absolutely great food and friendly service. They are able to create dishes for you as well. Portions are good sized and you don't leave hungry.
Prices aren't cheap but are certainly fair. We get lunch from them quite often and just love their food. They have a small patio as well.

Thanks for the tips, everyone. I think we'll try Bali tonight, and put Five and Panna on the list for the next two nights out.

Yowsa, that was good! Bali pulled it off. I've never had Thai food before, but I certainly will again. Talk about a taste explosion. /ubbthreads/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Bali is great-mostly Indonesian food
If you want Thai with a lot of menu choices and as close as you can get to traditional Thai cooking without travelling there, you should try Indo-China Gardens across the river(Sault Michigan).
Panna doesnt have authentic Thai dishes.
I havent tried Five yet.

I second that, definitely! The food at Indochina is fantastic. Very clean food, not oily or greasy or anything like that and the taste of anything we've ever had there has been excellent - never needs seasoning and there's not been anything that we haven't enjoyed. Hubby would walk a thousand miles for their egg drop soup too. lol /ubbthreads/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif
