http://soonews.ca/viewarticle.php?id=28301 this one could be quite interesting, the low pressure system certainly has a lot of energy to work with and taht means strong winds that could reach 100 km/h ....

Nope. This is what is known as the "dry slot" in a low pressure system. The low itself and it is deepening right now, will be moving directly over us by tonight, that's when you will see the heavy rain (almost horizontal) and strong winds move in....and lasting overnight. The saving grace is there isn't much cold air behind the front, so we shouldn't be seeing any snow from this one...

I just came in after three hours of trimming hedges and raking, it's beautiful out!
What's the odd 50 mile an hour gust, tad of lightning and thunder here and there and a little torrential downpour every 5 minutes??

There's an interesting piece of aluminum something flapping around off of a barnish/garageish building behind us. I'm also hoping that doesn't let loose and hit anything important, like say...a person.

Currently we are experiencing winds of sufficient force in the Straits area to require an escort of certain "high profile" vehicles across the Mackinac Bridge.

Examples of high profile vehicles include pickup trucks with campers; cars with small boats, bicycles or luggage attached to the roof; Ryder or U-Haul trucks; any vehicle pulling a boat; semi-tractors with enclosed trailers and all trailers with side walls over two feet in height. High profile vehicles must be escorted.

Motorists are asked to reduce their speed to 20 miles per hour as they approach the bridge and be prepared to stop. Bridge personnel are stationed at both ends of the structure to provide instructions regarding how and when to proceed across the bridge.

All vehicles must exercise appropriate caution. The Mackinac Bridge Authority is monitoring wind speeds at various points along the structure. Additional steps will be implemented if conditions change. If you are planning to travel to the Straits area, please tune to AM radio 530 or 1610 for updates.

Oh I can see it getting worse, as I mentioned before we fell into the "dry slot" that's now pushing to the east. The wrap around effect will soon set in. A low pressure system draws all sorts of air masses into it, wet, dry, cold , warm...the cold air is behind the low, that will push in Thursday, the winds will now pick up as the low is sliding over us tonight. By the way, this low pressure system called a "weather bomb" has now been deemed stronger than the edmund fitzgerald storm by the US weather service. What we saw tonight was rain associated with the cold front that's now pushing into southern Ontario. Just because you see clearing for a few hours doesn't mean the storm is over, it hasn't really begun yet, at least the dangerous stuff...

Sorry Macs , not trying to scare you. The information comes from the National Weather Service, so I'm just "reporting" it because it falls under local news when threatening weather is a factor. And I remember the Edmund Fitzgerlad Storm too and I remember it being a very nice day and mild for November before the storm rolled in.

b&aMom
10-27-2010, 12:11 AM
7UP, you may want to look at Accuweather's continental radar. That baby is far from done...you're just looking at one storm line. Check out that pretty blue area that swings from Saskatchewan, under Manitoba, and smacks into the Thunder Bay area...that's snow. That weather (since some don't feel it's much of a storm) is cyclonic...spinning counter-clockwise, with the center over the Thunder Bay end of Superior. Last time I saw this...last year?...the sucker was spinning right over top of us. Wasn't fun. This storm may not be the "worst in 70 years" that the US National Weather Service was forecasting for us, but it's no picnic, and it's not over.

Giant trees are busted and cracked up, anything not weighing a ton or strapped down is blowing around the streets lol I haven't seen wind this strong for a long time...then again, I'm not that old lol

The thought of this becoming a storm like the night the Fitz sunk is scary. Sounds like you're talking about the tree in our front yard. Trucks were hitting it when they went by, took off someone's mirror which ended up smashed at the end of our driveway. PUC came and removed the tree, cut it up and left it in the front yard for their clean up crew to come around to get it. About 1/2 hr after they left, the large tree in our front yard broke and fell on top of our house. We're waiting for PUC to come back because the only thing holding the large part of the tree up is the power line to our house. It's been 4 hrs now, we're not sure how long the line will hold up before it lets go with the way the wind is blowing and the weight of the tree on it.

There are some tall mature poplars that I am sure will come down in a strong wind. Wonder if any did come down there.

I call poplars "good for nothing" trees, because I have seen their large branches fall off only because of the weight of their own leaves, not even a wind. If they are within reach of your cottage you should take them down

I think the worst of it is over. My hair didn't blow off at work today so it's all good..:)

Here is a question for the tree huggers out there, with the storm hitting now when most of the leaves are off the trees would more damage have been done to the trees had they had their full compliment of leaves ( more wind resistance)?

the leaves on the trees would of given the wind more surface area to push up, but the cold also takes away form the trees elasticity.

Neighbour lost some soffit, no idea where it ended up.

Starting to get a better understanding why Hubby doesn't like a yardfull of trees, and here I thought he just didn't like raking the leaves up.

Still major windy, it sounds like a freight train outside. Fully expecting to lose power again but hoping like hell none
of the huge trees in my yard get broken off tonight, had enough damage done already today.
Time for Mother Nature to take a powder!

Did you piss her off?

Not only was the wind bad. Today our power went off at 12 noon..came back on at 9 tonight. The PUC said they put us on their list of things to do. Everywhere trees were down and no power from Gros Cap to The east end of the city. But we were the last people they fixed. Makes you kind of mad when you are freezing and the people on the other side of the street have electricity.

NTP you were without power for 24 hours? Wow that must have been tough. We had periods of no power 3 hours at a stretch but that was the worst of it for us.
How much damage did you suffer?

I must say im very very impressed. Where I live it seems the power goes out all the time, and in wind storms its almost a definite that we loose power. BUT since this storm started a few days ago we have NOT lost power at all :)

I lost my phone and power.

Can't help you with the power, but I always find my phone down behind the cushions of the couch ;)

We have one phone connected to a jack. We learned our lesson that time the electricity went out over On.
