Pat Burns had barely been laid to rest when thieves smashed into his car and stole some of his family's most cherished possessions.
The hockey coach's widow discovered items including signed hockey jerseys from every NHL team, family photos, and a designer men's watch were missing from the ransacked car.
Even bedsheets from a hospital's palliative-care unit were missing in the theft, committed just hours after Burns' funeral on Monday. He died Nov. 19 after a long battle with cancer.
Police say the thieves knew exactly whose belongings they were stealing.
"They went through his stuff," said Const. Anie Lemieux of the Montreal police, noting Burns' wallet was in the car.
"The person who left with the shirts and everything knows that this is Pat Burns' stuff."
The stolen items include:
—Thirty jerseys signed by star players from each NHL team.
—Two suitcases containing Burns' clothes, and those of his wife.
—A Movado men's watch.
—Many family photos.
—Bedsheets from the palliative-care unit.
—An iPad.
—Women's jewelry.

I am not saying any of this is right but why were those things just left in his car. And why were there bed sheets from the palliative care unit. I just found some of it odd.

You'd wonder why they had all that (including 30 jerseys) just left in the car, suitcases, jewellery and whatnot. I could see if they on a trip or something, but it doesn't sound like they were.
The bedsheets were probably ones he ``used`` while in the hospital, some people prefer stuff like that from home when they are in the hospital.
Sad that they knew whose belongings they were and the circumstances of late that the family was going through, to add this to their misery.

Maybe she didn't feel like lugging them around the funeral with her. The signed jerseys may have actually been signed at, or just priorvto the funeral. His watch was probably returned to her at the funeral, by funeral workers. I'm pretty sure she would have been driven to the cemetay in the hearse, and the car left at the church.

So instead of talking about the thief, you guys are gonna blame a grieving widow for her choice of transporting personal belongings. You people are disgusting.

Personal belongings?? Hmmm.
Bottom line. She should have kept them more secure. Unfortunate, but that's the way the world is.
And excuse me for asking, but just what was she going to do with that stuff??
It will turn up somewhere.

Firstly I wasn't blaming anyone...If you recall I stated it didn't make it right. I was just curious as I found it odd that there would be 30 or so jerseys among other stuff in a car on top of which they said beds sheets from the palliative care unit. Why would the palliative care unit sheets be in the car. It just seemed odd but it could also be just the way the writers wrote it. Its wrong and disgusting that anyone would do this to ANY grieving family but just found some of the stuff odd.

I agree with you MF... It is absloutly discusting that something like this would happen but you have to ask yourself why you would leave all of these irreplacable belongings in a car... hell I dont leave stuff in my car here in the Sault... I hope the stuff is returned... Especially the pics and personal items...

Have any of you gone days on little or no sleep at a dying loved one's bedside? Clearly not, or you'd know that you walk around in a daze. Planning a funeral, dealing with the loss, exhausted physically and emotionally, having watched your loved one rot away, you don't exactly think about what you have to transport, and if thieves will break into your car. For god sake, people.
The jerseys were to be auctioned of for charity. Their sheets were likely their own, brought in for his comfort. They were likely given a certain amount of time to clear out the room. At the Davey home and ARCH we were given 24 hours.

I don't know if people realize this, but dealing with the tragic loss of a spouse is a hard thing to do. Maybe the items were left in the car because the owner of the items was too busy dealing with the loss of a loved one after several long bouts with cancer, and didn't think some idiot would come and steal items from a funeral.
Thankfully, we here at Soonet are above grievance, and would never make such a mistake while dealing with the loss of a family member. I guess a lot of people here are just too smart for that and always have everything under control, no matter what is happening in your lives.
At least this allows for people to question the actions of a widow, grieving the very recent loss of her husband, only to have some treasured possessions stolen.
Good job guys, I think we may have hit an all time low...
