"The mainstream media has all but ignored the recent Associated Press report that the three major insurance companies for Protestant Churches in America say they typically receive 260 reports each year of minors being sexually abused by Protestant clergy, staff, or other church-related relationships.

In light of the sex abuse scandal that rocked the Catholic Church beginning five years ago, religious and victims’ rights organizations have been seeking this type of data for years. It has been hard to come by since Protestant Churches are more de-centralized than the Catholic Church.

Responding to heavy media scrutiny, the Catholic Church has reported that since 1950, 13,000 “credible accusations” have been brought against Catholic clerics (about 228 per year.) The fact that this number includes all credible accusations, not just those that have involved insurance companies, and still is less than the number of cases in Protestant churches reported by just three insurance companies, should be making front page of The New York Times and the network evening news"

Looks like sexual abuse knows no boundaries. A sexual deviant is a sexual deviant. Catholic, Baptists, Pentecostal, Mormon...it doesn't matter; deviancy is deviancy.

What a shame some people want to use this tragedy simply for denominational gain.

What an even bigger tragedy some of those very same people are ministers of a church. Such people come off more like vacuum cleaner salespeople looking to 'one-up' the competition than 'men of God'.

To me the really sad thing about this thing and it doesn't matter if its the RCs,JW or any other isn't so much the crime as the cover up. At least the offender can claim that its a mental disorder or what have you but what can those that cover it up claim? Also if they truly believe in their faith don't they think that there will come a day judgment? I've never been able to understand the thought process that would allow someone to cover up these crimes. Yes at the time its better to sweep it under a rug but these things always have a life of their own and always resurface and when they do it is always far worse. So why not just call the cops in at the first hint of trouble and let things take their course? Yes there would be bad press for a little while but at least they could always claim to have taken the high ground. When the trouble was going on with Deluca a family friend who was also a teacher said something to the effect of "I always made sure that he never taught any of my girls". So either she is a liar or is guilty of the cover up too. I guess it was ok for him to "teach" other peoples daughters but not hers.

Yes, there was a cover up, and it doesn't matter what denomination you're talking about.

I think that shows the human frailty of it all. A vast majority of people didn't expect this stuff was going on. When the news began to leak to church officials panic set in.

How all churches handles this in the beginning was wrong, and actually exacerbated the problem.

However, I think credit needs to be given for the fact people are now admitting the abuse happened, and the correct steps are finally being taken, albeit late.

Does it matter? Kind of late to worry about that.

Just somthing I noticed on the web.

Same sex abuse is not usually considered paedophilia. 81 percent of the abuse is same sex.

"Same sex abuse is not usually considered paedophilia."

I'm confused.

If a 25 yr old male sexually abuses a 12 yr old male, how is that not paedophilia?

Conkay, you got those particularistic glasses on again, the ones that only let you see what you want to see?
