K, good/bad/new/used.... iPad, notebook, tablet? It's for a 17yr old going to college. I'm lost, but I also don't want to pay threw the nose, just reasonable. Thanks.

For College you need a good general office packet. Typically this would be Microsoft Office, but it could be other packages.
Typically you can get software at highly discounted rates when you are a College student.
So you really should look at system with a physical keyboard and mouse, that is portable, and can be hooked up to various devices. And that would typically be a laptop.

I let my kids decide for themselves. If you need to make the decision for her just ask what she wants to do with it. If it's just surfing, taking notes, chatting, skype and doing assignments a netbook might do the trick.

She already has a laptop, but she's turning into a I need to update and be better kid. So I think her laptop plus our home cp should do just fine. And maybe a ipad for a gift later for fun. Oh and NewCasa it'd her choice, just trying to help her make the right one. Thanks for the input. If any more PLEASE let me know.

Sorry if I sounded insulting Hope, that was not my intent.

As far as choice I've got all three myself, but I'm still considering losing the great big desktop machine. I find that my laptop is what I use most. I've got an iPad and love it, but there are some things you just can't do on it, although I think that will change in time. How about this:

Things the iPad does better:
Netflix
Books
Portability
Apps
Longer battery life
Skype

Things the laptop does better:
Games
More complex applications
More comfortable to type
Work - especially long documents, etc. (see above)

How's that for a start? Both do have their place.

No, No didn't take it that way. I really do need the input. :)

I pretty much own everything and agree with pretty much everything here. The iPad is awesome at what it does, but it is an internet device, not a full blown computer. If you don't own a more-than-serviceable desktop or laptop, then I wouldn't even think about buying one yet. Has far as mobile computing goes, a netbook is probably still the best choice if there is any inputing involved. I love my iPad but it doesn't replace my other computers.

Having said that I see that there is a laptop coming to market this fall that will run Windows 7 (or any other OS of your choice I suppose) and the screen detaches into an Android tablet. That sounds really interesting.

I have been using OpenOffice for years now, it is free and does everything that MS Office does, it even will open up older versions of Word, which Word has a problem with.
Just google it.
