View Full Version : New Shaw packages

What's interesting is the fact that you have to bundle them with TV, and they become available in 3 days.
Oh, and they can't offer 50 Mbps or higher in SSM since we are not upgraded yet...

05-29-2011, 07:00 PM
Those are going to be some WILD speeds once the upgrades are done.
I can't wait to see how close they come to actually hitting them.

05-29-2011, 08:16 PM
I would say not close, that's a huge increase in bandwidth for a network.

05-29-2011, 09:28 PM
Agreed. It is quite a large investment in their infrastructure. It looks as though they have realized that they will need to increase their bandwidth in the near future with the increases in internet demand. Maybe they have just decided to upgrade now and lead the way instead of falling behind and trying to catch up.
Either way, consumers are the ones who will stan to benefit.

looks like there in talks with going to fiber to the home from what one of the techs were telling me. They just installed behind my home new fibre and they said they are doing much more in the sault over the next year

06-04-2011, 12:11 PM
got the 50 meg warp this morning.....seems to be close to expectations :)

06-04-2011, 07:19 PM
How did you get that? I tried forever to get it and they kept telling me they don't offer it in Sault Ste Marie.

06-04-2011, 07:34 PM
i went to the shaw office directly this morning and picked up the new modem...works like a charm...been hitting consistent 54-56meg on d/l...3 meg up

$20 more per month vs extreme-i
SMCD3GH docsis3 modem is $3.95/month to rent

currently a 175gig cap, which will be changing to 400gig as of june 8 (or thereabouts)

06-04-2011, 07:53 PM
And that is where I went less than 2 months ago and they told me they don't offer it.
I will pay them a visit next week.
Did you sign up online or just walked in and sign up at the office?

06-04-2011, 08:24 PM
just walked in and signed up...walked out with the modem :)

06-04-2011, 09:05 PM
You got it with the new package, or stand alone?

06-04-2011, 10:07 PM
the modem is currently only available as a rental for $3.95/month

06-05-2011, 12:54 PM
I just want to make sure I understand what you got : you signed up for one of those new packages I posted above?

06-06-2011, 06:33 AM
i have digital tv/internet with shaw. The only thing i changed was my internet. I didn't have to "sign up" or bundle anything in order to get warp internet. It changed my bill by 20 bucks, that's all i can tell ya

06-08-2011, 05:58 PM
I think I just blew the internet up.

06-14-2011, 07:10 PM

Needle would fly off the chart if the remote server could maintain the data stream.

06-24-2011, 07:26 PM
try this site http://www.terago.ca/speed-test/Default.aspx and see what u get i get 191.99Mb/s which would be really nice if i had this all the time but on speedtest.net i still only get around 17Mb/s

06-24-2011, 09:13 PM
55/5 for me on that site. How do you manage to get 191.99 Mbps downstream?

06-25-2011, 11:40 AM
i have no idea how i am getting these speeds from this site but i showed the Shaw tech guy this morning he was flabbergasted by them but on other speed sites i get anywhere from 7Mb/s to 20Mb/s, there is something wrong with my internet and they can't seem to figure it out downloading other stuff off the net i get about a 1MB/s hope they can get this **** fixed

06-25-2011, 12:54 PM
If you are on Shaw there's no way you could get 191.99 Mb/s from anywhere. That's really strange.

06-25-2011, 04:22 PM
yeah i know

07-13-2011, 06:58 PM
okay well after 4 weeks and many techs we have figured out what was stalling my downloads it was Kaspersky internet that was slowing it down and apparently they can do anything in regards to it so what are you guys using for security?

07-13-2011, 10:17 PM

07-14-2011, 12:45 AM
i'm gonna check that one out and see, from what i can see the price seems to be cheaper then kaspersky atleast online that is. Is this available instore? Thanks Hans

07-14-2011, 06:06 AM
I got it online, but I am assuming it's available in stores also. Although local stores might stock only certain companies rather than a collection of companies.

makes me miss dial-up internet ;)

Tried out Giganews silly Accelerator program (lastest version v1.0.111.1) saying it could do 10x the download speeds!

This was only for COMPRESSED HEADER DOWNLOADS!!! So after I had a good reason to download ALL 1.5 BILLION Headers from alt.binaries.hdtv .... I took it for a test spin! It takes a while to get up to that speed but after tweaking it a few times I maxed out at 12.5 MEGABYTES all on regular Shaw Extreme package!!

08-02-2011, 03:05 AM
Here's the reason WHY I downloaded the BILLION PLUS headers instead of just using regular old .nzb search engines.

Home computer has Shaw Extreme. Away computer has 3G 100kbs internet or Satellite speeds. If I download all the headers, it takes about 10-12 hours depending on time of day and other factors. I just set it up before I go to bed.

When finished, I go into my usenet client software "cache folder" and Zip/Rar the now very large GB's cache file called "alt.binaries.hdtv.cache"

When done compressing the file, it cranks out a much more manageable file size of less than 100megs because there is NO audio or Video!! Like 100 to 1 compression!!

I then either Upload the extremely compressed Zipped/Rared cache file via email or upload site, or save it to a common USB Flash Drive!

Next time I'm at Away Computer with slow internet speed, I download the 100meg Zipped/Rared file. I extract the file to the same usenet client software program, same cache folder, and I have the same Billion plus headers without waiting for years on 100kbs 3G/ satellite! I can take my time and comb the articles individually for as long as I wish! You can do this with other people's Saved Games, large books, or any other large extremely compressible files!! Just remember the location of the data your looking for matches the exact version of the program your using!

I picked up the new broad band 50 modem today and cannot get higher than 18Mbps signed up to chat with a shaw rep and after an hour he finally came on line. He then proceeded to reboot my modem and cut himself off from me, now I have to sit in the chat que again untill someone comes online again. :(

consistent speeds for the last 3 months :)

With the upgrade what will we actually notice in the "real world of things"? Currently, I download a song in 15 sec , would downloading one in 5 seconds make a difference, I click on a web page and its up in 1/2 second will I notice if it takes 1 millisecond .My online games like Call of duty play at 0% lag will I notice -20% lag?

Its like playing a game @ 70 fps vs 120, sure 120 is faster but you do not notice the difference while actually playing?

Might be great for people who download supper larg files and are in a hurry, put how often does that happen?

I will take the upgrade if its free but would not pay extra for it.

As you point out, it depends on what you use your internet connection for.
For me it's well worth it, since I have multiple devices in my house who all access the internet, and I often have to download data that is very large >30 Gb.
And trust me, being able to download 30 Gb over a 100 Mbps connection instead of a 15 Mbps connection is a day and night difference.
