and 8 tracks were the next greatest invention that came after 4 tracks. I think I still have a Buffalo Springfield 4 track tape somewhere.

It's true, honest. Of course once the 8 track came out your old 4 track tapes were obsolete unless you bought an adapter that slid into the 8 track player.

I have a whole box full of 8 tracks in the basement. Why am I keeping them? The other half won't part with them lol.

I also have some great music on cassettes that I don't want to give/throw away. Does anybody know if some music studio/business will transfer cassette tapes onto audio CD's? If they do, how much do they charge? Just wondering if it is worth it or should I just go buy the CDs instead?

I have a vintage home 8 track player/recorder with the dual VU meters in perfect working order, it might be worth something some day.. lol :)

Yes it might be, and I hear that people are playing records again.

My mother-in-law had one of those music memory boxes. I had to- well I chose to get an 8 track/cassette machine and transefer the songs over. I got an aversion to Tom Jones after that.

Guys, a little fooling around and a simple adaptor cable (2 RCA to 1/8 stereo) and you can take your old 8 track player directly into your computer.

I use "Audacity" to record. It's a free program, very versatile and can output WAV or MP3.

I've had pretty good success transferring old mixing board tapes (from previous bands) and transferring them to digital & CD, did the same with a few old tapes I just wouldn't be able to find very easily. Remastering them help a ton but it's been a few years since I did it.

Sony Sound Forge for Mastering. (EQ, Remove Hiss, normalizing etc). I use Sonar (Cakewalk) to transfer the tape to a track within Sonar, I'll do some manipulation in Sonar but not much. Then output and re-master in Sound Forge.

As for vinyl ...

I haven't gone back there but my Dad has and he swears on the separation he hears from a vinyl as opposed to a CD or .FLAC or MP3. Have to admit, there is something about vinyl that can't seem to be replicated.

Too bulky and very high maintenance though.
