View Full Version : Hydro Cost Increases
I was just talking with my sister and she said the her hydro bill has increased for the up-coming year about 60%. She is on equal billing and they have not yet started time of use billing. Has anyone else had this kind of increase?

Here is what they said on the news Oct 17. http://www.torontosun.com/2011/10/17/ontario-hydro-rates-going-up
Yes its going up but not by 60%
The Ontario Energy Board released on Monday new prices for residential and small business consumers that will go into effect Nov. 1.
On peak power will now cost 10.8 cents a kilowatt hour, up 0.1 cents. Mid- and off-peak power will rise 0.3 cents a kwh, to 9.2 cents and 6.2 cents a kwh.
Another reason we sold our home and enjoy an apartment.
she also owes a lump sum from this year. Maybe they just underestimated her energy use last year?
I took out our bills to compare and I noticed that almost 50% of our power bill is for "delivery" charges. anyone know what percentage they charge for that?
Another reason we sold our home and enjoy an apartment.
Sounds like a wise decision, and no headaches with maintenance

Too bad you are no longer investing your money into something.

If her equal billing was $200 a month, it is now $320?

Are you or where you on one of those door to door energy contracts scams?
no contract, just Great Lakes Power or Algoma Power now.

Algoma Power's rate for residential accounts is posted on their website and provides details of the various charges including delivery. http://algomapower.com/Userfiles/File/Res%20Rates%20Effective%20May%201%202011.pdf

Only to reapply it elsewhere. Taxation is a no win situation for the working class.

Our PUC bill almost doubled this month!

why aren't more people doing the energy retro fit and switching to natural gas....my neighbour had Energuy do a home energy audit and then she got reimbursed from the government for the price of the audit and a portion of her home renos (the ones that make your home more energy efficient) ....the project is still going to the end of March.

Our last PUC bill was approx. $180 and the one I just paid was approx. $155.64
We've got oil heat in the house, NO electric heaters at all.
And we're thinking of definitely switching over to Gas next year, because the cost to heat our house for winter is killing us!! Last year it we'd fill up the tank which cost approx. $950 and that would last 6 weeks

Kerosene lamps, sweaters and throw blankets, and socks or warm slippers. Undo the vent for the dryer, elastic band an old pair of panty hose on the end and keep that warm moist heat inside. Plastic over non vital windows, doors etc.. Caulking, tons and tons of caulk. Heavy drapes over windows open only during the day to allow solar heat in. Rolled mats at the bottom of drafty doors and weather stripping all around. Cook in double boilers so a single element heats two or more pots. Lights! Never leave a light on when exiting a room. You can turn it on upon your return BUT if you don't it costs you nothing.

Kerosene lamps and heaters are major stinky!! lol
Naw, not any more. They are or can be perfumed and some perfumes even have the added bonus of extending burn time.
Many bills have increased but mostly due to electric heat being turned on.
Electric furnaces are especially brutal.
Natural gas here... no electric heat.

My last bill was about $90. The one prior was $85... we ran a/c all summer and our bills did not hit 100 or more.
I'm not sure at all why the bill has skyrocketed. Our bills (with fans and AC running all summer) never went above $70. This month it's almost $130. *shrug*

Water usage? Leaky faucet. Hydro bill is more than just your electricity costs. Look carefully at WHERE you are paying the extra.
Also, even if you can't yet access it online, the PUC will tell you which days/times you had a larger than normal power draw to help you isolate the problem.
Maybe I will have to call. We don't pay for water. We only pay for electricity and the only thing I can think of that we're doing differently is using less by having the fans and AC off. lol I would think that would make the bill lower. Maybe I'll have to turn them all on again for the bill to drop. LOL!

The smart meters and rate increases do not take effect until Nov 1st, So hold on and just wait. http://www.torontosun.com/2011/10/17/ontario-hydro-rates-going-up

I understand the peak hours, you can choose to not use so many lights and when to wash, but with electric heat you need it all winter 24/7 with no choice about it.

I just called PUC and the date depends on where in the Sault you live. I'm on the East end and ours started on Oct 17. We are all correct I guess.
It depends on the date your meter gets read.

WoW...how the hell can they justify that? I'm not complaining that I'm not paying it "yet", but if I was and the otherside of town wasn't I'd sure as heck be raising something about it.

Other parts of the province have been paying TOU rates for years. Should they have raised a stink for being the first in line? My end of town switches on Oct 26th. Regardless, we're all going to end up with a large jump in PUC costs next month. There is NO WAY that it can be any other way when even the Lowest (off peak) cost is more than what we currently pay.

Capp, you'll only get one letter, each of the 20 billing cycles will have a different start date.

Actually the price for the fixed rate until Nov 1 was 6.8 for the first block and 7.9 for the remaining while the off-peak price for TOU pricing effective Nov 1 is 6.2 cents a kwh, lower than both of the fixed price rates...

I received my letter separate from my bill. About two weeks before my bill came out. I'm in the east end and my letter said it would start Nov 9th for my household. So it seems more like your billing cycle. My mom is in the east end as well and hers starts Nov 7th. If you're not sure when it starts, then just start adjusting your use by Nov 1st and you should be fine.

Paying bills and remaining current is going to become difficult for a much larger demographic with crap like this. The middle class shrinks just a little more. The 1% strikes again. This will lead to some darker, cooler homes.
Well when I finally looked at their bill, it was closer to an 80% increase, from $160. a month to $290. a month. I think about $2400. for the year in delivery charges. They do have electric heat and have implemented a number of changes since this notice came in. They wanted to change from equal billing to paying bi-monthly so that they could see whether the changes were helping and they were told that they had to prove that they were living there year round? Who the hell cares if they are living there year round, as long as the bill is getting paid? They are both retired and are trying to live as comfortably as possible. I hate to see what is in store for us in the up coming years
