"..the 50-percent divorce figure is simply a myth based upon decades-old (and woefully inaccurate) speculation.

I figured.

Quite right, it's more like 70%, especially in Sin City (ssm)!! :)

Quite wrong, even here.

Basing this on speculation I presume.

Gee, Cat, one of us quoted a source and one speculated.

Can you figure out which is which??

Different areas can have vastly different divorce rates. Chachi speculated that the divorce rate here is higher and you flat out called him wrong. So by all means show me the link you are referring to regarding divorce rates in the Soo.

Still waiting....

Hold your breath for me to prove (or disprove) someone ELSES claims!!!

Shouldn't be too hard for someone actually interested in discussion to come up with some proof, don't you agree Cat??

It must be hard considering you titled the thread 'The Real Divorce Rate' then provided us with a beautifully written opinion piece.

7 out of 10 of my gf's that live in the Soo are divorced.
Most of their men were cheating horndogs, a couple were just possessive turds.
This city is horrible for that type of thing.
p.s. cat I'm a she :)

My apologies my lady.Noted.

I would be interested in the specifics...
points to ponder:
just because someone SAYS they are happily married does not mean they are
remaining married because they fear the social stigma from fellow church goers is not really the spirit of marriage
I wonder if more or less people are getting married
are they talking about ceremonies and all or just pen and paper marriages

Now if some people present anecdotal evidence, some others go ballistic.

I myself have two divorced children. Same reasons, too.

But then, one is male.

So, who do I believe?? Let's find some numbers for the Sault.

Some people are unhappy, whether single or married.
Sorry, I have no source for that. Just my opinion.

I would tend to agree with you and I would disregard any source that tries to quantify happiness from various aspects of life. Too many hormones for that.

As for the Sault divorce rate, I would imagine it being quite low. Just from my point of view the majority of what Chachi says about people in the Sault take place in non married couples or couples who stay together anyway. Anecdotal but since there is probably no easily attainable stats on the matter, I would just go ahead and say I am right on the button.

Guess Who?

I just did the quick accounting for 33 of the couples I am familiar enough with to supply stats for. Of 33 couples, only one is divorced (once), the rest have been married (happily or not, doesn't matter) for anywhere from 8 to 46 years. That kind of "busts" your theory.

... and you know this because your gfs told you so? Now that is nice reliable third party evidence that would hold up in court.

Do published divorce rates also look at unmarried couples who break up from a common law relationship?
