In a recent interview, National Intelligence Director Mike McConnell spoke about recent court rulings on FISA, the so-called “Protect America Act”. Nothing McConnell said was too surprising given his position in favor of monitoring the private sector. His statements included details about FISA rulings which require court warrants for electronic monitoring and comments to the effect that the number of hours required to get together such warrants makes the process too difficult. McConnell also let us know that there are less than 100 people are being monitored in the U.S. under such warrants but that there are far more people being monitored overseas. And he suggested that companies like AT&T and Verizon which participated in the surveillance should be given immunity for their actions since what they did helped protect America from terrorism. Uh huh.
