In the single most momentus day in British politics since WWII, the United Kingdom has voted to leave the European Union. The impact of this result has been far and wide, with global markets hit and UK Prime Minister David Cameron announcing his resignation.

Friday's vote could also see a break up of the United Kingdom -- which is composed of four countries: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Scots, a majority of whom want to stay, have said they will call for a referendum for their own independence (remember the 2014 Scottish referendum? That vote to stay prevailed by 55% to 45%) -- so it can join the EU.
Northern Ireland leaders called for a referendum too after the vote results.
"The British government can no longer claim to represent the political or economic interests of the North in Europe," Declan Kearney, Sinn Fein National Chairperson told CNN.
"There is clearly a democratic imperative for a border poll in the North."

They have done it, now lets see if the UK itself breaks up.

The UK won't break up. The laughable idea of a united Europe in shattered, however.

Glad to see the people of the UK do this. They've always had an uneasy relationship with the Continent.

Just don't forget the EU is a very large economic market. Not having the UK as a go between for trade agreements will mean less trade for north america.

Wrong. If anything, trade will increase. North America will still trade with the UK and the EU.
