A bi-partisan bill being introduced to both the House and Senate in Washington next week, a ten-year, one billion dollar project for the Sault is on the table.

The economic impact would be comparable to the Department of Defense putting a major air base up here in the 1950s. In other words, it would be a game-changer.

The area sure as Hell could use the support. The area was stripped over the years.

American protectionism won't allow Sault Canada much benefit.

American protectionism won't allow Sault Canada much benefit.

I didn't expect us to benefit from a programme designed to help the American Sault. I suppose there may be spillover in the form of cross-border shopping and the like but little else. Our governments seem to have abandoned us as we founder in financial doldrums.

They're gonna build a big lock. Not helping us at all.

They're gonna build a big lock. Not helping us at all.

Why would it? They are a separate Nation. If our own government doesn't help why in Hell would another country step up to the plate? It would improve shipping and thereby help Canadian shipping as well. It will help the local economy and we may benefit from spill-over.

Just to be sure I'm reading this thread correctly, Barry is criticizing a US project for not helping Canada, right?

At first blush it certainly does.

At first blush it certainly does.

Aristotle would NEVER blush for reading the worst into anything anybody said!!!

But, by all means, let us know about benefits to the Sault!!

The benefits to Soo, Michigan, will be massive.

Sorry to disabuse your current state of un-reality, but I'm pretty sure the economic impact to Ontario is not currently being debated in a heated manner in the US Senate and House. :(

Of course not!!! With a POTUS like THAT, all they CAN talk about is what idiotic thing he will do next!!!

I was giving you a "good one" compliment.

Guess compliments aren't things that flow your way too often...and that makes me kinda' sad :(

Barry, the most benefits will be for Michigan directly, but you have to realize there will also be trade benefits for a border city like ours.
And I think this city can use any help she can get.

Any little tid bit right now would be great.

If it happens, a $100 million dollar investment for ten years affects a wide geographic area, somewhat regardless of artificial political borders, especially in the remote neck of the woods we inhabit together. Of course our sister city would see some windfall in one way or another, and so will Brimley, and Pickford, and Rudyard, and Newberry, and ...

Soo Locks rebuild runs out of cash. Nobody's really worried

Funding to complete a Soo Locks modernization study has been inexplicably cut from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers 2017 work plan. But officials are optimistic the work will continue

Looks like a minor snag with the report. The bill itself is already in Congress.

It will create 15,000 jobs in a community of 14,000 people.

Ummm, yeah, there will be a major economic impact.
