View Full Version : smokers
You ever notice people who smoke, I mean, you can tell a smoker by the appearance of their face. They look brutal, when they do smoke, they realize it is very socially unacceptable and disgusting. But they still do it, they whine, I am trying to quit. I never started, no sympathy here.
Its a slow death, turns me off to no end. I met a girl a few days ago, she smokes too much, grose.
Say what you want about me, I dont care, Im healthy, I look good and feel good.
Even worse sometimes, some women, ugh, it makes them look like they are 50 when they are 25.

Well happy birthday Object X. I just had my birthday yesterday /ubbthreads/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif
Back on topic. My hubby is a smoker, I am not and he does not look older because he smokes. That is just a bunch of bs. Yes the smell gets to you sometimes but you learn to deal with it.
Edited because Object X posted his birthday was in 4 days and now it is gone. Just wanted to point that out so people did not wonder why i posted what i posted lol.

Honestly what does it matter when we are all going to die anyways?
Let those choose how they would rather go.
I could care less if people choose to smoke, so they say you live a shorter life but it is no guarantee that if you don't smoke you will live longer either.
You can spend each day of your life in misery trying to beat death all you want but the truth of the matter is it will get you one way or another.
Live everyday like its your last as you never know when it could be.

I think the whole anti smoking thing is getting out of control...Poeple are trying to ban smoking everywhere, and acting like breathing in second hand smoke for 10 seconds will result in a long painful death, which really isn't realistic or true. Alcohol is far more harmful to your health, not to mention society, yet people aren't banning those things (at least not to the extent that they are with smoking). But I also don't feel pity for the smokers who are trying to quit and can't, since they did make the choice to start smoking. But I think that if someone wants to smoke, they should have the right to do so without having to listen to non smokers complain or go on banning sprees.

I agree with one thing you say slave. "no sympathy here." People who choose to do things shouldn't really even have the option of sympathy.
It seems you like to tell people what to do. I do like to hear opinions, so thats the plus I get I suppose. Not much on the dictating though, I hope your girl is great in most everyway and you can't get past the smoke, no sympathy here.

You ever notice people who smoke, I mean, you can tell a smoker by the cigarette in their hand. They look like they don't give a **** about non-smokers or what they think and when they do smoke, they realize hey my nerves are calmed down a bit. I wish i never started but glad i did so i can blow smoke in all the non smokers faces who makes a big deal out of it..especially when we don't even smoke inside anymore
Its a slow death, and i knew that when i started . I met a girl a few days ago, she smokes too much, but she always has a smoke when i need one and i realize its her choice too.
Say what you want about me, I dont care, Im not healthy but I look good and feel good.
Sometimes, some women, it makes them look like they are 50 when they are 25. Even though im sure they dont care because looks may not be everything to them.
Question for smokers?
Do you give a rats a$$ what non smokers think about what you do outside or in your own house or what you are doing to your own health?
I am anxiously waiting for the non smokers to insult me, like I care.

slave, I think if you had a frank discussion with any smoker, you'd find that every single one wishes they had never picked up that first cigarette. Just like with anything else, people are individuals, with individual bodies. Some become more addicted than others, some are affected more than others, some smoke more than others. It can be very difficult to get from being a heavy or moderate smoker, down to even a light smoker, never mind quitting. I think if you looked up some research, you would find that the addiction to nicotine is stronger than the addiction to heroin. Heroin addicts get medical help (ie. institutionalization in rehab, hospital, etc.) to quit, smokers are told just quit. If it was that easy, we'd all have quit by now.
I agree, it is a nasty habit, but one the government seems to like to make a lot of money from.

Hey slave...it's funny but you say you're healthy? I bet your lungs look similar to that of a smoker with you living and breathing here in sault ste. marie.
Also, smoking is the biggest drain on the health care system. Its causes the most preventable diseaes.
Well if some of you smokers quit for awhile, then decided to be near a smoker, you would see the light.
Its like anything, you have been doing it for so long, you cant see the effect.

/ubbthreads/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/lol.gif Right, smoking is the biggest drain on the health care system. Not people who eat crap from boxes or fast food or junk food. Not people who drink alcohol. Not people who develop diabetes (often from a crappy diet/overweight). Not from people who are overweight and wouldn't dream to exercize. No. Only smokers are a drain on the health care system.
I go to the doc once a year for a female gyn checkup. How often do you use the system? I get regular, heavy exercize, how 'bout you? We don't eat fast food, or from a box. How 'bout you? I'm not overweight, and actually, for the first time in my life, I am at the weight I "should" be, having been called "underweight" before. How bout you?
Your pics will do nothing. I used to put black lung pictures on my parents' bedroom door as a kid.
Andre, thats another issue, why should our tax dollars support people who cant control there eating habits or like you said.
I love it when people say they hate they are fat, but eat like you know what every chance they get.
I know there is a deeper problem with these people, get help then, dont whine.

Wow.....it seems like Im a Slave woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Who the heck are you to determine what is right or wrong. I dont smoke and I come from a long line of smokers. Both my mom and my dad smoke. My girlfriend smoked but recently quit. My friends at work smoke and I go outside on my breaks with them. Sure I breathe in some second hand smoke but I dont care.
I think this whole thing with banning smoking within 50' of an entrance is retarded. Sure banning smoking inside bars and restaurants was good but banning them from patios is just plain ignorance. Heavily drinking does some serious damage to you aswell. Maybe the government should look into stating a law that only allows bars to serve 5 drinks max per patron a night. Its ridiculous. Or maybe they should instate laws against how often you can drive your vehicle, because god forbid someone inhales exhaust and dies from it.
Anyone that believes that non smokers have any rights above smokers is plain ignorant. All this, comming from a non smoker.....

No need to generalize, I don't smoke, and I can't be around it due to asthma and allergies , I don't drink at all either, but I'm not one to judge anyone personally on that matter. As long as it is kept away from me people can do what they want.
I do wish they'd stop, b.c I have family members I would like to see around a while longer without health issues.

I think if the main concern is the cost to taxpayers for health care, etc..then I think we should first address the problem of losers who have nothing better to contribute to society than repeated demonstrations on public bulletin boards of their obvious lack of education or refusal to use thereof.
Secondly, I think that if the government is so motivated to stop the so-called drain on the health care system by smokers then OHIP should cover smoking cessation products..(and NOT just for those on public assistance). People with jobs smoke too.
/day 10 on the patch...and it would be cheaper for me to keep smoking.

Well...just so you know, that tobacco and liquor taxes are so insanely high that they do infact pay for the majority of the health care that we recieve. So in essence, smokers are paying for you when you get sick.
Along the lines of diseases...Heart disease, Liver and Kidney failure, IBS, most forms of cancer (excluding lung), mental illnesses (including long-term psychiatric care) are EXTREMELY costly to our health care system and quite widespread and in most cases people have genetic dispositions to them NOT because they smoke.
Just some more drains on the health care system include...Ambulance services, Chiropractors, Podiatrists, Gynocologists, Abortions, subsodized birth control (for those little teeny-boppers who cant keep they pants zipped up), Counselling services, Public health.
So, in short, it seems that you dont really look or research into our health care system as much as you really should. As well, nothing "drains" the health care system, except for well; health care itself.
Another little tid-bit...smokers contribute approx. $10 Billon in taxes each year!
Before you tell people to BUTT OUT, you should do your research!
Cheers!

Smokers are smokers,Tokers are Tokers, RUnners are runners.

He replied to me "It gets that runners high, you can never feel so alive, your heart is racing, blood circulating, its fantastic"
I told him I smoke 8 cig's a day, and I get that way after climbing 1 set of stairs.

But in all seriousness, I do know that alot of smokers are ignorant.
They stand outside of the malls/restaurants/walmart/homedepot
RIGHT BEISDE THE ENTRANCE, with their carts waiting for their cabs/spouses/kids/etc. Puffing away.
I'm a smoker and think thats rude and disrespectful. I never will knock anyone for smoking, but to block an entrance with smoking, is ridiculous.
Or driving up to someone, all the windows rolled up, 2 pepople smoking with kids in the back! THATS RIDICULOUS!

I don't mind what people do, but I feel they should always ask themelves do they have an addiction? or does the addiction have them? And more than likely it's the last bit-and if the person isn't happy with what they are doing, then they aren't happy within themselves-then it's important to change the behaviour. No matter what face they show in public to show they are fine with it-They will know deep within whether they are or are not, and those who are satisfied with things don't have to change a thing, but they should still respect those who choose not to be around smoke. That's just my humble opinion. /ubbthreads/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Now, what if someone just said stop eating?

I use smoking as a crutch, I find myself not smoking at all when I have my daughter out and about, but when i go back to work, i start up subconciously. So, once i tackle that issue, its smooth sailing... well with rough waters.

LOL...you know what the funny thing is?....all you smokers who are putting up all the emoticons and thinking your pretty witty & stuff are going to realize someday ( probably very soon)...when your seeing Dr. Walde in the ARCC wondering why you have lung cancer, larangeal Ca, or some other type of ca......
so really......Who is the joke really on?
Palliative care isnt no joking matter...
I feel like taking up a new habit........
Smoke anyone?

I did as well, I quit when I was pregnat,Ha Ha I always tease that I'm a nicer person when I smoked,I would have a smoke calm down and talk things out,now I just bite heads off,,lol
DR Teeth, my dear Aunt had recently passed away from lung cancer, and a small maligamanoma (sp) in her brain. Now this lady never drank or smoked.
My grandfathers brother had severe skin cancer and died from the result.
Everyone who smoked in my family lived well into the 80's, and the ones who died early, (50's,60's) Were of heart attacks.
Now thats not the national statistics, but just because you smoke doesn't mean your going to get cancer.
Well this topic must've smoked... because it just died.
well for you smokers when you are older and need medical attention.. don't waste our doctor's time and cry about lung pain
there are far more deserving patients (children) who i think we'd rather see attended to than you
If I get lung cancer due to smoking, i don't deserve Canadian health care money. And I should be turned away if i try.
I strongly beleive that, because it was my choice to damage my self.
Its like the people i see that goto the hospital Emerg, because they have a cough. Or a scrape on there forehead.

Well I can tell you for a fact that I've never smoked a day in my life and Dr. Walde and I are already on a first name basis. All three of my siblings smoke and so does my mother...and they are all healthy as horses. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

There are smokers and then there are smokers....
Some people smoke on a regular basis...like a pack a day...or even a half a pack a day...
Then there are people that only smoke when they go out for the evening...to have a couple of drinks....and maybe a couple of cigarettes
THEN...THERE ARE THE MYSTERY SMOKERS!!! The ones that never, ever smoke....but when they get together at a staff party....THEY BUY A DECK!!!!!
I've seen people at a staff party, who don't smoke....absolutely kill a pack of DuMauriers in a very short evening!
Smoking is certainly not exclusive to the low-life faction........take a good look around.....
And, oh,. ....while you're at it.....stop and think about what else your affluent neighbours are doing...it might surprise you!
They might not be alarmed by second hand smoke......as a matter of fact....they might not want it to get away!!! If you know what I mean!!

I couldn't care less if you smoke. It is your life. Just don't do it around my kids.

I am a former smoker. I think it is gross, but that is just my opinion. If people choose to smoke, there is nothing anyone can do. It is a free country.
I didn't make a good choice when I started as a teen, and now that I am in my 30's, (I quit in my 20's) I have seen too many people up close dying of cancer. Yes, lots of things can give you cancer, but since smoking is proven to increase your odds of getting it, why do it?
I certainly can't and won't try to be holier than thou about this topic, but all I can say is that hindsight is 20-20.
As for the strain that smokers put on the health care system, sure they do, but look at all the other choices that people make that do the same, such as poor diet, obesity, alcoholism, etc. It would be hard to get society to make consistently good choices all around.
LOL! People living in SSM are more likely to get cancer from the Steel Plant than second hand smoke from a cigarette.
I mean look at the stats for cancer rates in this city, can you honestly blame it ALL on smoking?

No, but as my son has asthma, I will not be happy if a smoker is sitting by him blowing smoke his way. If you want to smoke knock yourself out. Just keep it away from my kids.

Smoking is the single, most common, stupid thing that a person could do to themself. When people try to justify their habit it simply highlights the addiction. Think about it! How could inhaling smoke into your lungs be "OK" for you. Smokers will always say things like what about the steel plant, St Marys paper or the odd health nut that dropped dead before their time but continually ignore the smoker cancer stats. Oh my, I almost forgot the last ditch excuse! Its my body and my life! If i want to smoke nobody can stop me! I pay taxes! What will happen when all the smokers quit and the government needs to make up the tax dollars!
Wouldn't it be nice to find out?

What I don't like is ppl who are incodsiderate smokers. I am a smoker and I try to be considerate as possible....even in my own home.

Not all smokers use this "theory" although its true, the Steel Plant is a major polluter & contaminate for this area. If you look @ stats of people dying of cancer in this area, then the amount of children that have asthma born HERE in the Sault, its staggering.I'm not defending smokers - I' m just saying YOU as a non-smoker WITHOUT a single smoker AROUND you WILL die or have asthma or develop cancer from the contaminates in this area in the air and water.
Worry about that for now. /ubbthreads/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/whistle.gif

The industry does contribute to the cancer stats in this city there's no denying that fact.I just wonder what the statistical ( sp ) increase is when you add smoking to the equation.
