Most Canadian families are worse off financially than they were two decades ago, says Burnaby-New Westminster NDP MP Peter Julian.

Julian said figures his office requested from Statistics Canada of family income between 1989 and 2005, show most families have seen their wealth decrease over the 16-year period.

“Working families and middle class families have seen their income erode. We have an income crisis and a prosperity gap,” said Julian Wednesday.

While Statistics Canada figures show Canadian families’ real income has increased by six per cent between 1989 and 2005, this wealth increase is not shared evenly by different income groups.

Family units earning less than $60,400 per year have seen their earnings shrink since 1989, while those earning more have seen their wealth increase.

It's possible there's more people in the higher scale now then back then also.
Hard to say when you don't have actual numbers.

I still don't understand Speedy's obsession with finding ways to find negative things to say about Canada. I hope all his defenders out there notice who starts all these threads.

Since when is a good neighbour someone who continually tries to find fault in another, while passing his own faults off as "bogus".

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

My "supporters" see I've made another point.

I have seen a big decrease financially being a working family in middle class.

I have seen those who have multiple kids and on assistance who get more in a month then what I have coming in.
We are a family of 6 so financially we don't get much to save away for a rainy day.

My husband and I work our butts off but get no baby bonus etc. Only to have a large portion of our wages taken off for taxes.

I'm not complaining about the free money part but I think middle class income should have some sort of a tax break.
Since we are working and trying to make a life for ourselves.

Only good thing about being a working family is we get to own our home which is why I do it.

It would be nice that's for sure.We get very little breaks as the majority of taxation comes from our working class.
