They are very effective and are like the invisible fences in that the jolt is identical to the one you get when you hit your funny bone. I used one and it worked great.

Depends on how tough your dog is. For some dogs, they will still bark, EVEN with the shock collars!

That one though is just a high pitched noise.

The good collars are: PetSafe PBC00-10782

(I have this one...but I have a super tough dog)

I bought one of those at Crappy Tire for my yappy poodle, and the damned thing went off even when she wasn't barking. A loud noise, wind, etc, set it off. It was punishing her even when she was being good, poor baby. I took it off and marched it back to the store.
If it would ONLY work when she barked, it would have been ok, since it shut her up in a hurry.

On the other hand...I bought a hand held one that I have to manually buzz, and it was much better. As the instructions say, just don't let the dogs see you reaching for them so they have no idea who or what this sound is coming from. It's called an Ultrasonic Pet Trainer, and I wore it around my neck on a string when I first got it. Now I hardly have to use it. She shuts up almost always on command, and I'm sure it's because I used this properly. READ the INSTRUCTIONS FIRST! and be careful that small kids don't get their hands on this. It can cause hearing loss if they put it to their ears, or someone else's. (pointed away from you, it is safe) Used properly, I think it's a very good training device.

Yes, thats why I said the 2 above were good. I've tested them. They go off by Vibration, so only the dog will get zapped when its barking...and it has to be a full fledged bark (mine has discovered that low barks = no zap).

They, like EVERYTHING else are not for every dog! Though there are some out there who just need it.
