Looking for cool and interesting ideas for winter vacation spots. Where has everyone been and what do they recommend?
What tips and tricks have people found to reduce the cost but still have a great vacation?

we took advantage of a cheap ticket/hotel/car deal to vegas and toured around while we were there. it is only a 3 hour drive to LA, and we stayed 2 days and one nite in beverly hills. drove all around hollywood, belair, beverly hills - the driving is not bad at all! did the bus tour thing when we first got there to get the lay of the land. the desert drive itself was also very interesting. death valley, the canyons. we also did the grand canyon tour, which was fantastic! and of course we looked around vegas and went through all the different hotels and casinos and tried the various famous buffets. it youre too cheap to gamble much like us, you dont spend alot of money and there is lots to do and see in that area.
i guess it depends if you have kids and what ages they are too.
we drove to orlando one year, taking turns and getting there as quick as possible. we stayed at a really nice suite and did some of our own meals to help with costs. we got the coupons for the waterparks and stuff to help with costs also. my recommendation for disneyworld though is to stay with them. they are open early and late for their own guests and there are no lineups at those times. we were there during the heat of the day and the line ups were an hour or more for each ride or ammusement.
what kind of vacation are you thinking of, and are there kids involved?

Single, older, no kids. Looking for someplace without snow and with lots of interesting things going on or to investigate. Canyon sounds cool - same with Death Valley and Vegas. I was looking at New Zealand earlier, but that's just a dream for now - very expensive. Sort of looking for something different.
That's useful stuff Kitca - thanks for the comments - I've been to Disney a couple of times when the kids were young (grown and gone now) - it's very cool. Even without kids I've always thought it'd be fun.
As far as the Colorado Rockies Max - might be a thought, but I was thinking more someplace without snow - I hate snow!

another trip we did that i would recommend. (i dont like the regular resort or cruise vacation,) we went to mexico, found we didnt like cancun, too commercial, but there were areas close by that were much more natural and authenic. isla mu hares (sp) nice snorkling, nice family hotels, nice beaches, rented bikes and toured the area, cool small bars & restraunts & shops. then we took the mexican bus to playa del carmen and stayed in grass huts off the beach. it was wonderful! the beach incredible, again with the shops, bars & restraunts - more personal and mexican, not americanized. the ferry dock was there to go over to cozumel, whcih, that whole island is beautiful. you can rent motorbikes or mopeds to get around since it is so much bigger, supposedly fantastic snorkling (we ended uyp getting sick so didnt get to snorkle there). and the ruins of tulum are just down the coast from playa del carmen, wonderful ruins right on the water. it was too hot and humid and as bad as i wanted to go into chichenezza sp?) you know, the big famous ruins, it was too hot, but tulum was very cool and old and big enough. i hear it is getting pretty built up around there. it was a very interesting vacation, lots to see and do. you just have to be willing to take a chance and not have reservations and stuff, just go with the flow.
when you do go to new zealand and australia make sure you save time for your stop offs in hawaii and figi (sp)
