An Algoma Steel Inc. employee and well-known Bay View community volunteer was seriously injured this past week in a workplace accident.

The steelmaker has so far not responded to our requests for information, but SooToday.com has confirmed that John Harris was hurt at the plant during the early morning hours of Wednesday, November 21.

Harris was subsequently transferred to St. Joseph Hospital in Sudbury, where he's believed to be awaiting back surgery.

Harris is well known in Bay View, where he volunteered countless hours to help operate the Mike Zuke Memorial Rink.

In 2005, Harris assisted in obtaining insurance coverage so the popular outdoor ice surface could continue operating.

He was also among community members who successfully worked to have the rink named Mike Zuke Memorial Park.

Never met the fellow. But he certainly sounds like a man who deserves all the grace and prayers he can get.

This is my uncle. He is at every birthday party, Thanksgiving and Christmas meal held at my house. He has taken my son to a Greyhound game, took them skating, took them camping for 3 days this past summer, and picks them up for McDonald's and ice cream every now and then.

He has a broken shoulder, broken pelvis, several broken ribs, a crushed vertabrae, a collapsed lung, and a ruptured spleen...and that's just what we know about so far. He is a mess. Had the crane operator not yelled at him to move, it would have been his head crushed. He was 30 months away from retirement. He is also an avid hockey player, and his house is not handicap accessible. It's going to be a long terrible journey for my uncle. He is aso a very active member of AA with many years of sobriety behind him, and the thought of him having to be on pain killers for the rest of his life is heartbreaking.

I didn't post anything earlier because I guess there's some kind of initial secrecy when someone is injured there, and I wasn't sure if it was okay to say anything yet.

My most positive thoughts going out to you, your uncle and family, JackieB. My husband told me of this accident the other day, and was unaware of his status. I'll let him know.

I just found out his lung is not collapsed, they thought it was collapsed because of the pain he was in trying to breathe with broken ribs. His lungs are bruised. They operated on his back yesterday for 5 1/2 hours and he should be back here in a week, but will be in the hospital for atleast 2 months. /ubbthreads/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif
