You can just call me T.O.D!!!
I cant remember exactly but I am sure my parents said it cost 300 a month to fill the oil tank. Years ago it was the cheapest source of heating but not now apparently...
It's hard to say ..it depends on so things. Gas and oil have been about the same but oil is going to be way more expensive in the future.
If I was you I would look for a house with electric heat ..you can control each room separably, no expensive repairs, no need to replace the furnace ever and price of electricity is more stable, it's clean,it's also safe and it will show in your insurance. In a long run it will be by far the cheapest.
I have heard people say they've had to fill it every 1 1/2 - 2 months through the winter, at about $700/tank. OUCH! Mind you it wouldn't be much in the summer. Not sure if they have plans for equal billing or not.
I am not merely a mass of molecules, incoherently careening through time and space. I am a child of God, destined for another world, a world before which this one pales in significance. Our spiritual preparation for the next world is to be the priority of this life.
I pay about $100.00 a month (during winter months) on average for electric heat and I have a 1800 sq ft house and a double garage
I heat with oil and it ain't cheap.
I'll be filling my tank again before Christmas bringing my yearly cost to about $2,600 for oil. We lower our thermostat to 64 F when we're not home during the day and 66 at night. We never set the thermostat over 70 F. We have a wood fireplace in the family room where we spend most of our time when home. We try to heat just rooms sometimes with electric heaters.
Our home is about 1,600 square feet and we have put plastic on all our windows. Our furnace, however, is old (1963) and not very efficient. A high efficiency furnace would save us between 25 - 35 %. I'm hoping to upgrade next year.

We pay 700-750 a month I think our house is around 1500 sq ft.

A new furnace will cost you $3000 -4000 ...it will take years and years by the time you see any savings and by that time you will need a new furnace again .....I'm telling you electric heat is the only way to go.

True. My upgrade may well be to electric heat.

Even if you need to upgrade you service to 200 amps ..it's only a $1000.00 or so and little wiring plus few baseboard heaters still comes out cheaper and your set for life. Best thing is you can turn the heat down in rooms your not in and that will save you lot of money.
We have a combination wood / electric. We put the new furnace in last year the total cost was around 6 thousand,Some duct work was done.

Six thousand for a furnace ...I could heat my house for 10 years with that money with electricity
It depends on the age of the home. Macs can heat his house cheaper because it is newer and more energy efficient (I know this because we've had this discussion before). My house is about the same size but I have a second floor and an unfinished basement. My house is about 60 years old and not well insulated. We plastic our windows in the winter and pay about $275/month for heating oil over a ten month period each year. We're hoping to pay less this year since we put in some new windows and a new terrace door but the price of oil seems to keep going up...
We average about $2500-3000 each winter depending on the weather and the price of oil. We also lower our thermostat at night and when we aren't home. Our furnace is 20 years old and running at 85% efficiency.
edited to add: It will cost you less down south. My sister lives in Trenton and I know the winters are milder and shorter there!

omg that seems really high!! I have gas heat and pay $200 a month for around 1500 sq ft.
oil heat
last year on a 2200 sq ft house cost for oil heat was $2050.00 for the entire year that equals $171.00 per month
p u c without heat $ 3000.00 = $250.00 per month
this is for the house in town ssm
how ever the house in goulais has enough wood put up for the all of next winter at a cost of $ 280.00
this is wood stove only
electricity has never been above $600.00 per year so $ 50.00 per month
no elec basebord in house up north just a wood stove
so in town $5050.00 per year just utilities/heat
so out of town $ 880.00 per year
differance $ 4170.00 savings per year
the cost of living in the city is alive and well and sucking the finances out of us for the sake of convienience

You can't compare heating costs when you have a wood stove ...also you don't get water and sewage charges ...so your argument is NIL and BTW ..wood is not free either
I have to agree with macs, in town in the long run its cheaper to go elec heat
to fix or repair or maintain a furnace is not cheap
bottom line I prefer a wood stove
besides its much more fun to sit in front of a fire and sip on wine as opposed to sitting in front of a furnace or baseboard heater and sip on wine
Im sure all would agree

Why would you pay double what everyone else is paying ?

wood stove is great if you don't have to buy the wood and don't mind the extra work. I know people in town who buy load of logs for $600 then they have to cut/split it ......and they still use oil top of that ....but they still think its free because they heat with wood
