Default Westminster Dog Show

Did anyone watch the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show? "Uno" the Beagle won Best In Show! Yay! I didn't get to watch it this year, but I was following it from the website

Here were the winners of group:

Hound: 15" Beagle

Terrier: Sealyham Terrier (considering there are only a few entries, this was cool!)

Non-Sporting: Standard Poodle

Herding: Australian Shepherd

Sporting: Weimaraner

Working: Akita

Toy: Toy Poodle

They said on the news that this is the first time the beagle has won best in show. It's been something like 105 years.

Yeah I'm glad the Beagle won! It's nice when the underdogs prevail...although, I hear he was a crowd favorite...

I was watching bits and pieces as well. I wish I could have a show dog like that. i'd have no idea how to get started in something like that though. Or where to get a showcase perfect looking pooch.

Any GOOD breeder produces mostly show quality dogs. If you find a breeder that shows their own dogs, they'd help you get started, too.

Of course, your dog would need to be registered with the CKC.

How proud would a person be of their dog if it won best in show at west minister!!!!

Although, I'd be stinkin' proud if my dog won something just local. Hehe.

I was going to buy my fiancee a dog but it didn't work out. It could possibly have been show quality as it was a $1000 dog and they were bred with show dogs, but I didn't ask because I never thought of it.

Someone should start a dog club here. I need a life lol.

There is a local kennel club. And there is a dog show in May...very interesting if you're into that sort of thing. You could learn a lot about breeds and what to look for in a good breeder, etc.

And I think I would die of heart failure if I ever had a show dog and it won anything...even something small! I'd be so freakin proud!!

Westminster is invitational only, too. So even if my dog got an invitation there...man...that'd be the proudest day of my life!

Too true. Haha. It looks fun and like something that would keep you occupied. But then I don't know if I could just let my dog be a pimp daddy if he was something special.

If your stud is that special, you don't have to advertise him, that's for sure. Same with females. You'll have other breeders asking for them...especially if they're from good lines.

Someday...someday I'll have my show dog and not just your average joe pets. Not that there is anything wrong with my mutts...I love 'em to death, regardless of what they have or don't have.

I dunno...if you're into the showing, you know what I mean

Yorkie, I'm just going to be learning it for the first time. All my life, I've wanted a "show" Great Dane. And now I have him.
Apparently it isn't too difficult to learn the ropes. They've got conformation classes at the Kennel Club on Saturdays. You can go there for, I think $4 per session.
If you get a good breeder, they usually have already spent time with them, teaching them to "stack" on a table. Jethro can already do that good.
And, even if they are proven champs, you don't have to pimp them out at all. Usually it's in your contract to whether you use him for breeding or not. You can just donate his sperm! lmao

I've been showing purebreds for 6 years. I love it personally and have gotten championships on 2 of my dogs. But you have to be very careful when looking for breeders, research the hell out of it and MAKE SURE you have copies of those health tests!!

Showing in itself isn't difficult, but there is quite a bit to it, it can get confusing and frustrating when you are just starting.

I now handle other peoples dogs, mine are finished lol. And then I'll get a new pup this fall. yay for me! I'm getting a girly this time, she'll probably be white.

Wow! You guys are making even more interested in it.

So you have to obviously do research in breeders first.

Find one, and get the dog.

Keep in touch with the breed (obviously) but then what??

Once you get your dog, you can take conformation classes at the kennel club here, like YIPS was saying. They're actually fun classes...I took them a few years ago. After your dog (and you) know the basics, register for the show! lol
