Default 1998 Ford Escort Fuel Pump???????

    Hello!
I have a quick question for anyone who knows the answer!
My dad has a 1998 Ford Escort, and it won't start. He's narrowed it down to the fuel pump (he thinks, lol). But, he's only had the car for a few weeks now, and he doesn't know where it is. He's been told it's in the gas tank, but then other people have told him that it's by the motor. I have no idea. I checked around on the internet, but I am not the best searcher, and I need help. If you know, can you tell me, please? Or know of a website that I can find the info? Thanks!!

About the only time you'll find it on the motor is if it'sd a carbureted engine. Pretty much anything fuel injected has the pump in the fuel tank.

to find out if it is the fuel pump, open the gas door and take the cap off, have someone put thier ear right to the filler hole, and move the key from the off position to the on position(not trying to start the car just the position that will give the car power). try this a few times allowing the key to remain in the off position for a few seconds so it resets everything. listen for consistency.

Also turn everything else off Radio, heater stuff like that, just to help with bieng able to hear the pump.

you should hear the fuel pump working. if you cant then you have a dead pump, even if you do hear it it may not be pumping enough fuel.

if you can hear it i suggest changing the fuel filter (usually located under the hood) its alot cheaper and easier than the pump. or adding some gas line anti-freeze(possibly a couple of bottles)

good luck and if its the pump i hope you dont have alot of gas in the tank.

another suggestion is you might want to locate the inertia switch and make sure the button is down. if not it will not supply power to fuel pump. most likely located in the drivers side or pass side kick panel. good luck
