My sincere condolences go out to the family of Mickey Renaud of the Windsor Spitfires. What a tragic occurence.

    The Canadian Press

    2/18/2008 5:55:40 PM

WINDSOR, Ont. - Mickey Renaud was making all the improvements necessary to become an NHL player.

As captain of the Ontario Hockey League's Windsor Spitfires, his leadership qualities were evident. He had the size, too, to make an impact at the highest level of the sport he loved to play.

On Monday, at age 19, Renaud collapsed at his home in nearby Tecumseh and was transported to Windsor Regional Hospital with no vital signs. Resuscitation attempts failed and he was pronounced dead around noon.

''This is the biggest tragedy in Spitfire history,'' said team vice-president and general manager Warren Rychel. ''Words alone cannot describe our pain at this time.''

Renaud was to have participated in the team's Family Day skate at Windsor Arena beginning at noon Monday. His teammates were called off the ice.

Im not sure if you remember but last summer my 16 year old nephew collapsed. He had sudden cardiac death. Luckily, he is still with us.

My thoughts go out to his family, friends and teammates.

We looked forward to seeing him play when the Windsor Spitfires come to the Sault to play against the Greyhounds, he'll be greatly missed by many.

Yes I remember Joey, he was a friend and I didn't end up going to the game that night. I arrived at school the following morning and someone told me he passed away the night before at the game and I didn't believe them. He passed away in his teammates arms due to a heart attack at the age of 16.

Joey was the best. He was a great guy. A friend of mine had called me very shortly after it happened. I was pretty stunned. Going to school the next day was rough. The hardest day of highschool and I'll never ever forget it.

Very good advice K-A. That is why my husband and I would never go to bed angry with each other. You just never know.

K-A is right - the fact that it happened on my birthday means not a year goes by that I don't think about him. Not only did he go to the same school, but I also babysat him and his sister a few times. Every birthday I tell someone new about his death, and remind them of how short and unknown the future can be, and to celebrate each year. People don't understand why I treasure my birthdays so much until they hear that story.
