Default Can you say stupid

ESPANOLA, ON - At 12:30 a.m. on March 1st, 2008, members of the Espanola OPP Detachment were advised that a snowmobile had gone through the ice on Lake Penache, Truman Township sometime between 10:30 p.m. and 11:15 p.m. on February 29th.

Preliminary investigation reveals that two motorized snow vehicles, each carrying two people, were travelling on Lake Penache to West Bay area.

As they approached the narrows (just southwest of Star Lake), the first snow vehicle made it across the open water safely.

The second snow vehicle attempted to avoid the open water but failed to do so.

The passenger, a 22-year-old male, made it out of the water but unfortunately, the 25-year-old male driver didn’t and he is presumed drowned.

No names are being released at this time pending notification of next of kin.

An OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit is presently enroute to the scene.

At the time of the incident, it was snowing lightly but the visibility was good.

Weather is not considered to be a factor.

The investigation is continuing.

Yes it is very sad for all those involved , why don't people use a little brain power as snow machines believe it or not are named that as they are designed to run on snow and not open water.

Unfortunately it is a common practice to run across open water, even a short stretch and if you are familiar to the area and are an experienced rider that knows how fast you have to go to clear it there is rarely a problem, not to say that things don't go wrong occasionally.
It's not clear in this case if they knew that they had to cross open water or they just came upon it and had no choice but to hit the throttle and hope for the best, when that happens the worst thing you can do is hesitate and lose your momentum.
If you ride over any water (frozen or not) you should wear a flotation suit, your life is definitely worth $500.
Very sad thing to read, there's been totally too much of that this year

"The second snow vehicle attempted to avoid the open water but failed to do so."

What is stupid about that? He tried to avoid it but failed and in turn lost his life. That is very sad!

who in their right minds would go snowmobiling on a lake at this time of year??? Situations can be sad and stupid, and IMO this case is both sad and stupid.

Many lakes have a couple feet of ice on them right now. It only takes 4 inches of good ice to hold a truck! The best and most solid ice is available in the end of February to early March.

I think stupid is a bit harsh. He made a bad choice of where to travel; that's all. The outcome truly is sad.

True it might be harsh but then a bad choice is wearing a striped shirt with striped pants. But then how many accidents would there be if you took stupidity out of the picture, we've all pulled bone head stunts that left us shaking our heads after the fact.

Pretty sad for sure. That area never freezes over, and people actually run the open water intentionally. What makes this even sadder....the boys mother lost her husband in a motorcycle accident two or three years ago, south of Espanola.

My thoughts go out to her

Might have been a poor choice of words but yes its sad but to put yourself in that position isn't the smartest thing to do. As I stated before we've ALL done it at one time or another.

Yes,it is sad for the families and loved ones. But MANY of these incidents are AVOIDABLE if the "stupid" factor is removed. How many times have we read about people familiar with certain areas have gone through the ice KNOWING that spot is "iffY"?? How many times have we read about accidents or riders going through the ice because they lost their way in bad weather....when they have gone out in bad weather, not when bad weather suddenly descends on them?

I don't care how skilled or knowledgable you are....."riding" across open water is NUTS;going anywhere near "iffy" ice is NUTS.

SADLY,too many families and loved endure the aftermath of STUPID decisions.
