"A court in Cyprus fined and released two Canadian soldiers yesterday after they admitted to attacking a British man outside a pub in a coastal resort town.

The soldiers, on leave after a combat tour in Afghanistan, avoided jail after pleading guilty to assaulting a 31-year-old Briton early Saturday.

A Paphos court fined Guillaume Simon, 25, $3,000 for causing bodily harm and Matthew Louis Pelletier, 30, $750 for common assault.

...James Sanford, a British resident of Paphos, suffered cuts and bruises in the Saturday attack.

Sanford told The Sunday Mail the confrontation started when the two men made advances on his wife. "Two of them crossed the street to where we were, one put his hand around her and spat at her feet," Sanford said.

After an exchange of words "one of the soldiers hit me on the head with a bottle," he said.

"I have 12 stitches on my face and my left eye is swollen," Sanford said."
