They may also come if you don't need them! if you don't first find about a burning permit, (and it turns out you needed one) a lot of neighbors have nothing better to do than call them, then you'll get a fine!

you need to have the FD come out and inspect if you have never had a permit before. /if you do you just call and renew.

I believe it is free.. but they have to come and inspect your firepit.

if your renting they're gonna inspect the building also for smoke detectors and fire hazards too in all the units
If you lend someone $20 and never see them again, It was probably worth the 20

The permit is free and is good for a year, just renewed ours. The first time they will come out to insect unless it has changed. We have had ours for quite a few years.

Nope I live by the hospitals too, and we have ours renewed every year, and never have any problems. However, if any neighbors complain they may revoke the permit.

I live north of town and theres a sign at our firehall that says that you can't burn during the day. Two hours before sunset and two hours after sun rise - which makes no sense to me but hey I dont' want the firedepartment coming to my house very badly. So we wait.

They're going to check to make sure there's a clear area around your fire, and a hose near by to put it out for safety, mostly. We have a chimenea on our deck. It's on a pad of fire brick, has a metal sheet behind it and the hose is hanging on the ouside of the deck. They had no issues with our setup, and gave us the permit no poblem. Now we basically just call down, answer a few questions, and then go pick up the permit. 2 years ago they dropped it off for us. I think it was just to verify that things were still kosher, but they had the complete permit in hand when they came here, and didn't really inspect anythng (of course you can't miss the fireplace since they walked by it to get to the door).

Yes you need a permit, its free.might take a while to get to you tho depends on how busy they are.I have an old transport rim on a few bricks and they passed that, but i hear they want to make sure you have smoke detecters in your house at the same time tho.

We started getting a fire permit about 9 years ago, they came to inspect it way back then, now all we do is call every year to renew. One year we had to call every month to renew, it must have been a dry year that year.
